rMove is revolutionizing transportation research by using in-app smartphone surveys and GPS data collection to reveal participants’ travel methods and needs.
How do you sign up? rMove can only be used by people who are invited to participate and requires a unique password to log in. Just download the app, follow the instructions, answer survey questions, and rMove takes care of the rest!
Why participate using rMove? As technologies and the way people get around continue to change, rMove helps organizations understand how, when, where, and why people travel. Participating in a study that uses rMove helps your community and saves you time compared to older survey methods.
And because honesty is always the best policy, we want you to know that rMove will use your location even when it’s not open (that’s how it does its magic). As a result, you may notice a decrease in your device’s battery life. This is normal and varies based on your phone’s age, battery health, and other conditions and use.
Added support for web-based surveys.

I thought the app was great for recording my movements! Liked the intelligence it had when a roundtrip occurred or whether I was shopping again or just walking around for exercise. The route I took from walking to a bus stop, taking BART train, stopping for lunch restaurant, then walking to my final destination ... then back home 4 hours later, was recorded and accurate. The app had questions to guide you thru the different types of movement. It was actually entertaining to see how the app would react! I hope the local regional transportation can use the data to improve local transportation needs and efficiencies.
Too much battery consumption + no reward! Don’t bother!
I participated in a travel survey, and while I was willing to do the surveys as requested, I could only do about a few day’s worth of them! This app uses so much background data it depleted my iPhone’s battery within just a few hours! And that’s with a totally new phone. It’s totally unacceptable, and there should be a process that lets you record data only while the app is open.
On another note, even after doing the surveys, the company went on to say I didn’t complete enough to be eligible for my reward, thus I won’t be receiving anything. That’s ludicrous! Not only did I do what they asked, I had to do these surveys on a battered battery!
Don’t even bother with this travel surveying app. Not only will it take a hit on your battery’s health, they won’t even acknowledge or compensate you for your time. It’s simply not worth it.
Developer Response ,
Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, we are able to offer compenstation only to those who participate for the whole study period indicated in the study invitation materials. We have worked hard to minimize rMove's battery usage and the majority of users have a good experience. However, there is variability across individual phones and we take your feedback seriously.
Cannot enable Location Services
UPDATE: This seems to be fixed now. Glad to see that. Will update again after using it a bit more.
No matter how many times and how many ways I open the app and close the app with location services enabled and/or disabled in iOS settings, this app cannot seem to figure out how to ask for permissions to use location services. So essentially I cannot use it. I've wasted way too much time with this already for something that's useless to me and to the county putting on the survey.
