Description

Get the most current and relevant New Jersey traffic information on your smart phone without ever taking your eyes off the road or your hands off the wheel with SafeTripNJ, sponsored by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority.
SafeTripNJ provides real-time, hands-free traffic advisories for every major highway, bridge and tunnel in New Jersey.
You simply turn on the application before you start your journey. SafeTrip uses your phone’s built-in GPS and the vast data in the New Jersey 511 travel information system to determine when you are approaching traffic disruptions.

When there is an incident nearby, SafeTrip broadcasts an advisory. There is nothing to read, click, or scroll through. Just leave your phone in the center console or on the seat beside you and focus your attention on the road.

By default, SafeTrip broadcasts advisories from within a 10-mile radius, but you have the option to alter the range to your preferred distance. SafeTrip will automatically repeat advisories every 30 minutes while you remain within range of the incident, but you can change the setting as well. You can elect whether to hear advisories from all directions or just from the direction you’re traveling (the default), and you have the option of filtering out advisories from various roadway types. If you’re driving on the Garden State Parkway, you can choose to hear only Toll Roads advisories. Likewise, if you’re driving on I-78, you can choose to hear only advisories for the Highways.

The application gives you audio player controls for Play, Pause, Stop, Skip, and Replay All. These controls should not be used while operating your vehicle.

If you place/receive a phone call while a travel alert is playing and do not have a plan that allows simultaneous data and voice, the alert will pause, and will resume playing when the call has ended. You can elect (in the app settings) to permit SafeTripNJ to continue playing (or play new advisories) while on a call. This option is disabled by default and will initially pause when calls arrive unless you specifically enable it.

You don’t need to register to use the app. SafeTrip operates anonymously. We don’t receive/record any identifying information about you or your phone. By default, the app will report your device-determined speed and location to our servers. The data generated by collecting that information is valuable. It improves our ability to provide real-time information about what is happening on our roadways. If you would rather not participate, you will be able to opt out simply by clicking a button on the settings page of the app.

The application is based on Information Logistics’ patent-pending "Open Microphone Platform," which is a queue-driven streaming technology platform used in combination with your phone's built-in GPS.

IMPORTANT - NON-GPS DEVICES This application will have some limited functionality on these devices.

Disappointing

Given the fact that this app has been around for two years, the lack of performance is disappointing. I've been driving on the Turnpike and the Parkway today, and the traffic issues I saw were not reported in the app. The other hand, Google maps and Apple maps both showed the delay. Also note that this app insist on location settings to be set to "always on"

Significant Improvement

Downloaded new version and find it well-designed in that it offers a large amount of customisation and a fairly simple interface. Basically it has a not driving/configuration mode and a driving mode. The not driving mode allows you to set alerts but also provides a map with traffic data akin to traffic in google maps (i find this so far to be better than google maps as it's much easier to see what is going on in your area.) When on the road it reports incidents either near you or on specific highways via speaker so you don't look at it. The downside is the need for location service access. If like me you set permission to "only while using" you'll get a limited functionality message. Not clear to me why this should be so. Anyway, recommended-so far. NB No ads as this is a service funded via toll revenue.

Great Idea

Great idea for an app. I like knowing whats going on, a lot of times navigation apps don't show road disturbances and this can give you a heads up before there's traffic build up. I love that this is simply audio over Waze or Google Maps so its not distracting.
