Life’s too short

I’m retired, and try to listen to WMAL on line during the day. Using a browser on my phone works to some extent, but is so frustrating due to frequent connection dropouts that I generally just wait the program I want to be podcast. Not only are connection drops rare in the podcast version, but there are far fewer commercials. (Vince’s podcast is really annoying, though, because whoever does the editing finds it amusing to put the commercials in the middle of sentences. I’m not exaggerating; it is not an exceptional thing, but the rule.)

As bad as browsers are, this app is MUCH worse. It usually rarely even starts, but if you’re unlucky enough to have it start, it will generally run for even shorter intervals before it drops out. Sometimes it will pick up again if you hit the “play” button, sometimes it needs to be closed and restarted. In either case, the first thing it does is play two commercials. The same two, every time.

On the radio, live WMAL is a series of commercials from a handful of sponsors, repeated endlessly, with an occasional interruption by talk radio. But it rarely drops out, and the talk is worth all of the commercials (and we’ve actually benefited greatly by using a couple of their sponsors services).

But life is way too short to waste on trying to use this app. Some web browsers (Opera or Brave) are a little better; at least they always open. You can’t even count on that with this app.

Worst Radio App Ever!

It is almost like someone created an app to discourage listening to their station. Start the app and you have to listen to an app specific commercial, change the volume and you have to listen to another app specific commercial. The app will also randomly quit broadcasting losing the connection, when you get it back, bam! another app commercial. I understand and support commercial radio, I don’t even mind when listening to one or two when starting the app, but more commercial just to change the volume or pause the app to take a phone call, again and again is greedy and Horrible.

I like WMAL!

WMAL is the premier talk radio station in Washington, DC, and has a great weekday lineup:

5-9AM is Larry O’Connor
9-noon is Chris Plante;
noon-3PM is Dan Bongino;
3-6PM is Vince Coglianese; and
6–9PM is Mark Levin.

I try to listen to Chris Plante every weekday morning. If Chris doesn’t talk about it, I probably wouldn’t be interested in it anyway & when Chris addresses an issue he does so with incomparable insight, wit & humor.

Having lived in DC for many years, I got used to listening to WMAL on the radio. Now that I’m living in North Carolina, the WMAL app keeps me connected to national politics from a sane (!) perspective.

The app is easy to use and less annoying than many. You can also get WMAL on other apps, but I use this. (Ads make terrestrial radio possible, so complaining about ads is silly, but I simply mute the commercials, which run at predicable intervals & for a set duration.)

I hope you found this helpful.
