Worked well until IOS 13.1.2
Have used this app many times over the past year and a half to control a YI action camera 4K to record youth hockey games. Very satisfied, great video, always connected to iPhone 6S and to iPad Pro. Very recently, the app suddenly stopped connecting even though the iPhone was properly connected the YI WiFi network. The camera is updated with the latest firmware. The app has been refreshed. Following the same procedure that had worked dozens of times in the,past. The only change I can point to is the recent update to IOS 13.1.2. Stopped working after that update.
Live Streaming
Purchased 4K+ couple weeks ago to live stream on Facebook (high school baseball games, youth baseball games, etc...). Several issues with the app. The main one for me, you cannot live stream. I have called Yi directly multiple times, emailed Yi several times, sent them FB messages, etc...
First time calling the lady didn’t understand why it wouldn’t work for me. Later in the conversation she tells me tech dept is working on a new firmware update that will fix the problem and they have known about this issue. She then proceeds to tell me it will be released in one week (didn’t happen). So I called back and talked to a different person. He didn’t know anything about the firmware update. He did talk to the tech dept and they told him a new firmware will come out in future for various items.
Email responses tell me to visit the website and read the tutorials or delete Yi action app and reload. I guess you don’t think I tried all of this.
Don’t waste your time with these Yi action cameras or app. They crash at random times, audio is horrible, live streaming doesn’t work, customer service doesn’t know what is going on but will tell you what you want to hear.
Decent but limited
I don’t really care for the use of WiFi to connect to the camera, since you can only have one WiFi connection going at a time; Bluetooth would have been better. But this is probably a limitation of the camera, not the app. There are also some limitations that are probably part of the firmware, like not being able to select any interval for a time lapse (why 1, 2, and 5 sec but no possibility for 3 or 4, for instance). The app is a pretty convenient way to control the camera at least, especially from a second, unused phone that you don’t use for phone things.
