Slugline: Simply Screenwriting
Write your movie.
$19.99
The highest-rated screenwiting app on the Mac App Store comes to iOS!
Slugline is a minimal, distraction-free environment for the most important part of screenwriting—the writing part.
Slugline works with plain text. It automatically turns your writing into a properly formatted screenplay, without you ever needing to press the Tab key.
FEATURES
⋮ Automatic formatting
⋮ Sync files with iCloud and Dropbox, or work locally
⋮ Printed on paper or PDF, your screenplay is indistinguishable from one made with apps costing much more
⋮ Helpful structure templates, including the famous beat sheet from Save the Cat!®
⋮ Slugline’s famous Integrated outlining
⋮ Notes, Scene Synopses, and Omitted text help keep you organized
⋮ Includes Courier Prime, a beautiful typeface designed for screenplays
• THE POWER OF PLAIN
Slugline uses the free and open Fountain screenplay format, which is nothing more than plain text. You can work on your screenplay anywhere, using any writing app. When you open it in Slugline again, everything will be there, properly formatted.
• INTEGRATED OUTLINING
Start with an outline, then seamlessly transition to writing scenes. Or jot down a placeholder for your third-act twist while you’re still crafting your opening pages. Slugline allows you to be as structured as you like, even if that means not at all.
• WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU
Slugline keeps getting better, and that's thanks to you! Slug us a line at http://slugline.co/contact with any questions or feedback you have, and follow us on Twitter at @SluglineApp.
more I noticed the app sometimes does not sync your changes to the original file, and instead creates a separate copy of it. This then causes multiple versions of the same script to pile up in the recents section, while I really just need to maintain one version of it. Overall, the app is better than most I’ve seen for screenwriting on phone, just hope this one aspect can also be improved.

I enjoy the app’s simplicity and functionality. What I don’t enjoy is how the app crashes four to five times every hour. It autosaves frequently, so a crash only deletes the latest piece (either one chunk of dialogue or description) but it’s still annoying.

This app is simple and intuitive and perfect for screenwriting without any distractions. It's helped me pick up writing in Fountain quite quickly. I appreciate the few templates that come with it, too, more as an example of how to incorporate "hidden" text within your writing.

Read raving reviews. Tried it for $19+ and it’s terrible. Not intuitive. Trying to hit return to get into the next correctly formatted section required backtracking. Not a seamless writing experience and I’ve been writing screenplays for a long time and have used almost all the mainstream software.

We’re back! And we’ve made creating and saving files simpler and better.
You can now create and edit screenplays anywhere you like, using the connected accounts (iCloud, Dropbox, whatever) from your Files app. Local or cloud, it’s up to you — either way, Slugline keeps track of your recently-edited screenplays in one convenient place.
1.7.1 03/07/2025
This is a big update for Slugline Mobile, focused on improving the way that saving screenplays outside of Slugline works.
⋮ We replaced the non-local storage options with a single “Files” location. Through Files, you can access your iCloud or Dropbox or your other favorite storage locations. (We had to clear your Recent Screenplays list to do this, but your files are all still where you saved them.)
⋮ You now get to choose a default location where new screenplays are created (in Slugline, or in iCloud), and you can switch that in Setup whenever you want.
⋮ We built the first VisionOS native version, because we wanted to be there for you, wherever and however you want to write. Let us know what your experience is like, because we’re curious how you like writing on the moon.
1.7.0 04/22/2024
⋮ Urgent patch for newer iOS versions to help prevent file corruption.
⋮ Better undo/redo history.
⋮ Improvements to hardware keyboard features and to iPad windowing.

⋮ Fixed a problem that could cause file imports to crash on iOS 16.

Fixes for crashes.
Previously on Battlestar Galactica:
Slugline 1.2.0 works with the Files app! You can enable Slugline as a location in Files, and browse/edit/move/rename your files there. You can also open Fountain screenplays in Slugline from any location in the Files app, and Slugline will edit them in place.
We’ve also added support for the .highland file format used by Highland 2 for Mac. This works with the Files app as well, so you can open Highland files into Slugline from wherever you have them saved. Slugline for iOS is now the perfect mobile writing companion for Highland users!
1.2.1 08/04/2018
Fixes for scrambled text, Files app support, and support for Highland files!

1.1.2 03/20/2018
More frequent saving, better Dropbox sync, a crasher fix for Spanish keyboards, and more clarity when deleting files.
There was a rare-but-nasty case where Slugline’s connection to Dropbox could get corrupted. We fixed it, but you may want to disconnect and reconnect Dropbox if you suspect you’ve been affected by this issue.
We fixed a bug where Dropbox documents weren’t auto-saving as often as they should.
Spanish-language keyboards were causing trouble with certain accented characters. Ya no más.
It’s now much harder to accidentally delete a screenplay by swiping left on the filename, because we removed the long-swipe-to-delete gesture. And it’s now more clear where deleted files go: into a Deleted Items folder, where, if you really want to nuke them, you can do so manually.
These updates are all a direct result of your reports and feedback. Thanks for helping make Slugline better!
