Rapidly improving my ear

I downloaded this app last night, went through the first 8 levels, and I already feel like it’s easier to figure out melodies by ear when I’m learning songs. I’ve been teaching myself piano very slowly for a couple years, and I was really struggling with noticing the difference between different intervals, etc. I used to sort of think that all “real” musicians just magically knew all this stuff…..but now that I have this structure for ear training I finally have hope that I can actually learn how to play jazz and improvise. I can’t wait to see how much I’ve improved after spending more time on this app.

I also love how the app isn’t too colorful or overstimulating - there’s no adds and the content is presented in a straightforward way, with just enough gamification to keep you on track. And it’s not buggy! As a developer myself - huge thanks to you guys!!!

Amazing Resource for Musicians

This app is wonderful. I don't normally leave ratings, let alone reviews. I'm a jazz pianist about to begin my bachelor's degree in performance, and since I began playing jazz, I've wanted to have really great ears, so I can understand everything on recordings and be more involved when playing with other musicians. I downloaded this app a little over a year ago, and it's been an immensely helpful supplement in my development. I've been trying to get all three stars and be one of the top users on the leader board on as many of the challenges as possible, and trying to do that has really forced me to build new ways to think about music in my mind. It absolutely blows my mind that I didn't have to pay for this app.

Piano teacher recommends, but fix melodic minor please!

I’m a classically trained piano teacher, I love using this app to improve my own ear and I plan to recommend it to students. I especially appreciate the algorithm which picks up on your weaker points, and gives you opportunities for dialed-in practice where it can tell you’re struggling with a specific concept.

Would give five stars if not for an error in how the app handles melodic minor scales. It plays the descending scale identically to the ascending and it expects you to do the same. ...The correct way to play a descending melodic minor scale is to flatten the 6th and 7th so you’re just playing a natural minor, but the app will ding your score if you actually play it properly - it wants to train you to play the sharp 6 and 7 on the way down as well as up, which is incorrect!

Devs, please let me know if you see this and fix the issue in your otherwise incredible/fun/useful app, and I will add the 5th star posthaste :)

Hey Chai!

Thanks for reaching out. So glad to hear the app is serving you well :)

Currently, the app handles melodic minor in the way most jazz musicians would use it. Some people even call it 'jazz melodic minor' when the descending version is the same as the ascending.

We're going to put some thought into all of this, and try working on a classical version of the melodic minor/harmonic game.

Thanks again!

**Update**

Hi Chai,

The latest version of Chet now supports classical melodic minor!

Under beginner in the Scales collection, we have two new games, "Harmonic/Melodic Descending (Classical)" and "Harmonic/Melodic Minor [Ascending and Descending] (Classical)". Harmonic/Minor Ascending is the same game for jazz and classical.

Thank you for your suggestion!
