This app was a game changer for me. I’ve always struggled to go to sleep. I have tried music, sleeping masks, white noise, muscle relaxation, etc. This app was really helpful in transporting me to beautiful, serene locations, putting my mind at ease, and finally allowing me to sink into the depths of unconsciousness at night, It’s soundscapes are beautifully realized visually, with varied, 3D immersive sound. I discovered that some of the soundscapes, especially the barley field and the cloud rainforest, were great aids to helping me write and work without getting distracted. Overall, the app has been a great improvement to my quality of life, which I did not expect initially.I initially got the free version and was really satisfied with the included features, so I upgraded. I have to say the monetization model was really wonderful, encouraging me to support developers without making me feel like I had to pay for a good experience. Recently the app was updated with tons of new sounds from Scotland and Slovenia. It now includes a subscription model, but for the quantity and quality of content, it seems well worth it, especially because it will help the developers flesh out the app even more. On top of that, they gave everyone who had purchased the app free access to everything, which is incredibly generous! I look forward to great new content in the future. Thank you so much!
Developer Response Hi Quantumlightgamer06, thank you so much for sharing your Portal experience and not least your incredibly kind words. Knowing that Portal has helped improve the quality of your life has put the biggest smiles on our faces - it's a goal that we hoped and dreamed Portal would achieve when we first launched and remains our driving ambition going forward! Thank you for your feedback and for being one of our early paid adopters, without your trust, support and encouragement during those early days it's unlikely we would have been able to grow Portal to where we are to-date. We hope you enjoy escaping to the beautiful Slovenian Alps and the Scottish Highlands, as well as a lifetime of escapes around the world to come! Nick.

I’ve been waiting to review this app, since I wanted to spend a fair amount of time with it before I did. I remembered that I downloaded this app a while back when it was featured, but never used it. It came in clutch one night when I was at a friend’s house, couldn’t sleep at all, and all I could hear was the extremely loud crickets outside his door. It was not the nature sounds that I needed! Anyway, that night it saved me since I had a huge day the next day and was on a flight all the night before. I put on the fireplace sounds (I’m a sucker for the warm crackle of a fire) and I was OUT. I’ve since used it for everything from focusing on a really important deadline (ADHD is no friend of mine) or to escape when I’m feeling anxious. This app has been a beautifully designed, well curated panacea to many of my life’s ills. It’s tough for me to describe the impact that this simple ambient sounds app has had on my life. But I just want to say thank you to the wonderful humans who made this possible. I also upgraded to the premium version of the app, well worth the $. If you guys have other packs that you release, I would pay more happily. XO, John.Note for the devs: please please please make the place descriptions more accessibility after downloading the portal itself, maybe from the pop up menu where you can change from sleep, focus and escape in the portal itself? I love reading the descriptions, but it’s tough to find later when I’m really enjoying a particular portal since I have to navigate back to the collection to do so.
Developer Response Hi 99Solutions, thank you so much for your incredibly kind words and your insightful and thought provoking feedback. We created Portal with the ambition of starting a venture that made a postive difference in people's lives and in doing so, working on something that we could all be proud of. So it means a great deal to the entire Portal team (just 4 of us) to hear our ambition coming to life through your words and the impact Portal's having in your life - it really does drive and inspire us to do more - thank you! On your point about new collections, we've got some exciting ones lined up and we can't wait to share them - we hope you love them as much as we do! However, please note that for everyone that has an active Portal Membership there won't be any additional charges for any new content we release - so no worries on that front :) We absolutely agree with your suggestion to make the portal descriptions more readiily accessible - the good news is we're currently looking into this, so hopefully this will be something to look forward to sometime in the future! Many thanks for your support and encouragement - it means a lot to us, Nick.

Update: Everything said before still goes! A year (or more?) later and developers still staying true to their customers! And thankyou for update on new sounds coming, I can not wait!!! And thankyou for taking in customer feedback and adding more variety of sounds💛 Previous review: I just wanted to update review since last app update and say again, it was refreshing to see an app devoloper stay consitent, although they switched to a subscription model they did add a way to pay a 1 time fee, and although its more then the $4, still compared to other apps $30 for lifetime is far more reasonable. But most important thing to note is they allowed the users who previously paid the $4 to buy the app to keep the full version along with all the updates, so when you purchase from this devoloper you can be assured you will keep what you paid for regardless of any future changes in the pricing model, and that is hard thing to come by now a days in the apple world, so thankyou! Suggestions: I also would love to see some more light autumn/forest sounds, maybe without birds (or at least light bird sound in distance and spread out a bit) in future, there are lots of water ones wich are great but more like the barley field one (wich is PERFECTLY done!) I would love!
Developer Response Updated reply: 👋 Hi Michelle, so lovely to hear from you! Absolutely delighted to hear that the first batch of St Lu portals have gone down so well :)And we really appreciate your patience with things and sorry about the tease - definitely not our intention. The super exciting news though is the second batch is on its way in the next few weeks along with our new Iceland collection and Spring collection - together these will more than double the number of portals in the Library to over 100 destinations for you to escape to and immerse yourself in. I know I'm biased, but I think they're some of our best yet! So lots to look forward to, which will hopefully make the wait worthwhile. 🤞 you love them when they land.As always, a massive thank you for all your support and enthusiasm for what we do - means a huge amount to us.Previous reply: Hi Michelle, thanks again for taking the time to share your feedback - we're incredibly humbled by your kind words and your support - it really does mean a lot to us :) So pleased that you're a fan of the Devon Spring Barley Field portal - it's one of my favs too! The field happens to be close to where my wife grew up and her parents still live, so it brings back lots of great memories of years gone by. Great suggestions for future content! I'll be sure to add these to our ideas board and we'll keep them in mind as we plan out our content strategy for the year aheads. Thanks again for your support and enthusiasm - it's infectious and motivates us to continually strive to push the envelope and develop Portal in a way that we can be proud of, Nick.

We believe the best experiences are shaped by little details that quietly make the world of difference.
This update brings refinements to iPhone Duo, improvements to playback and smart lighting, iOS 27.2 compatibility and a handful of small subtle improvements that make everything feel seamless.
*What’s new in v4.1.1*
- A more seamless Duo experience: Added a new transition when opening iPhone Duo from the Now Playing screen, alongside additional layout refinements.
- Live Activities improvements: Refined the design and fixed an issue that could prevent Live Activities from starting.
- A little more control: Added a Pomodoro Timer shortcut and new App Intents options to choose whether timers run in the foreground or background.
- Smoother playback: Improved playback on slower connections, with refinements to make your experience more reliable.
- More helpful guidance: Portal now provides guidance when visuals, audio or lighting are temporarily unavailable, helping you understand what’s happening and how to get things working again.
- Improved smart lighting: More reliable HomeKit lighting connections.
- Under-the-hood refinements: Fixed issues with cancelling audio downloads, managing audio sessions when returning to Portal from the background, and compatibility with iOS 27.2.
As always, thank you for all your feedback and bug reports. The time, effort and care to drop us a line is certainly not lost on us and we’re incredibly grateful.

Sometimes, all it takes is opening a window. In an instant, the world beyond our walls feels a little closer.
For 8 years, we’ve been working to bring that feeling to our devices. And then iPhone Duo came along, with the physical act of opening a window built into the hardware itself.
A window to the world, in your pocket.
What’s new
- iPhone Duo support: open up new horizons with an experience designed around Duo’s unique form factor. Whether closed, unfolded, seated, or standing - Portal’s Focus and Pomodoro Timers, Sleep Timer and Wake Up Alarm have been thoughtfully redesigned to perfectly fit all of the Duo’s various poses.
- A more immersive Library: a simplified design brings the places you love closer, with refined layouts and smoother transitions.
- Smoother navigation: refined animations and transitions make exploring Portal feel more fluid.
- Design refinements: improvements throughout the app, including better support for Dynamic Type.
- Playback and environment controls: further refinements to help you make your experience your own.
- Performance improvements: image loading, caching and playback refinements for a smoother, more reliable experience.
8 years ago, we chose the name Portal because we believed in the magic of opening a window to somewhere else. We’ve spent all this time trying to live up to it, finding new ways to bring the natural world a little closer to home.
Seeing that idea take on a new, more tangible form with iPhone Duo is a special moment. Thank you for being part of the journey, for sharing in what we’re building, and for reminding us why it matters.
We hope you enjoy jumping into the fold,
Andy, Nick & Stu

For 8 years, we’ve been working to bring that feeling into our everyday lives. Now, with support for iPhone Duo, the physical act of opening a window is built into the hardware itself.
Unfolding the Duo becomes part of the experience. As the screen opens up, so does a window to nature.
It’s a small but meaningful detail that brings our physical and digital worlds a little closer together.
A window to the world, in your pocket.

4.1.0 Oct 21
Hot on the heels of our last update, here’s another small but important one, helping to iron out some of those early v4 creases - with fixes for Circadian Flow, video playback, Offline Mode and Focus Timers.
What’s new in v4.0.3
- More Reliable Circadian Flow: fixed an issue that could cause Circadian Flow to jump to the wrong part of the day at midnight in some timezones.
- More Reliable Playback: fixed an issue that could prevent video playback from recovering after being paused for a long time.
- Better Offline Mode: fixed an issue that could cause the play button and images to mysteriously disappear in certain situations.
- Smoother Focus Timers: fixed a bug that could prevent playback from starting automatically when enabled in the Focus Timer advanced settings.
A special thank you to Ian from the UK, who spotted the Circadian Flow issue and helped us track down and fix it. And, a big thank you to everyone who has taken the time to report bugs and share feedback with us. There are always a few bumps in the road with an update as significant as v4 - but what we’re always, always super grateful for is the patience, understanding, and trust in us that if things don’t quite go to plan, we’ll move heaven and earth to fix it. It genuinely means more than words can convey.
*Portal v4*
Portal has always been about bringing the natural world a little closer to home and into our daily lives, because we believe nature is fundamental to our health, wellbeing, and a quiet part of what it means to be human. Our biggest update in 7 years touches every part of the experience, making Portal more in tune with the wild world beyond our walls.
Here’s what’s new:
- All-New Liquid Glass Design: building on the biophilic principles at the heart of Portal, Liquid Glass brings the fluidity & physicality of the natural world into the app. Requires iOS 26/iPadOS 26 and up.
- Circadian Flow: sync Portal with your local time of day and play portals that mirror the rhythm and changing light of the world outside.
- Streaming Playback: play portals instantly without downloading first.
- Playable Collections: play entire collections as a seamless journey.
- Audio Normalisation: balance volume levels between portals for smoother transitions.
- Favourites: save the portals you love most in one place.
- Search: easily find portals you’re looking for or discover somewhere new.
- Widgets: Home Screen, Lock Screen & Control Centre widgets for quick access.
- Timers & Alarms: a new Pomodoro timer and enhanced alarm controls make it easier to focus, wind down or wake with nature. iOS 26 required for AlarmKit support.
- Handoff: pick up where you left off and move seamlessly between devices.
- Improved Siri Integration: use Siri for media playback and search, with on-screen awareness.
- Orientation Enhancements: landscape views on iPhone and portrait on iPad.
- Window Resizing: supported on iPhone and iPad.
Huge thanks to our beta testers for their patience, feedback, bug reports and good humour - you’ve helped us create something we’re incredibly proud of.

4.0.3 Oct 12
An important update to Wake Up Alarms and Sleep Timers, alongside a handful of fixes and refinements to make Portal v4 simpler, easier and more enjoyable to use.
What’s new in v4.0.2
- A Better Wake Up: we’ve listened to your feedback, and we know the Wake Up experience hasn’t been as intuitive as it should be. We’ve worked day and night to completely rework it - with clearer settings, better volume control (including a preview option) and easier set up with tips to help. When an alarm is running, you can now swipe down to continue or end the Wake Up experience. We’ve also changed it so that your alarm and timer settings no longer have to be manually saved - it's now automatic.
- Favourite Curation: a new popover list makes it easier to see, reorder and remove the portals in Your Favourites carousel.
- Better Breathing: breathing exercises now have a countdown before they begin and a stop button when paused. Audio cues now continue to play when you close the Now Playing screen or when Portal is playing in the background.
- More Reliable Behind the Scenes: fixed crashes when rotating the device with info windows open, improved recovery when Library images temporarily fail to load, and lighting connections now more reliable when restoring from an iCloud backup.
- Notably More Helpful: a note now appears in the Membership screen explaining what happens when a Guest Pass ends. We’ve also added a dedicated ‘Restore Purchase’ option for those times when the App Store doesn’t immediately recognise you have an active Membership.
- Some Added Polish: enhanced support for iPhone 18 Pro & Pro Max, fixed volume & lighting sliders on iOS 18, improved reduce motion support.
To everyone who’s shared feedback on Wake Up Alarms and Sleep Timers - thank you. We’re sorry the experience hasn’t been what it should have been. We’ve listened and we hope this update feels like a big step forward. Not just fixing what wasn’t working, but making the whole experience significantly better than before.
And huge thanks to Franzisca (Switzerland), Craig (UK) and Simon (UK), along with everyone else who helped us hunt down sneaky bugs and smooth off rough edges.

*Portal v4*
Portal has always been about bringing the natural world a little closer to home and into our daily lives, because we believe nature is fundamental to our health, our wellbeing, and a quiet part of what it means to be human. And so we’re thrilled to share our biggest update since Portal launched over 7 years ago - one that touches every part of the experience, making Portal feel more immersive and more in tune with the wild world beyond our walls.
Here’s what’s new:
- All-New Liquid Glass Design: building upon the biophilic principles at the heart of Portal, Liquid Glass brings the fluidity and dynamic physicality of the natural world throughout the app, and in turn helps create an experience infused with a deeper sense of presence and connection. - Favourites: save the portals you love most in one place.
- Search: finding the places you’re looking for, or discovering new ones just got a whole lot easier.
- Widgets: new Home Screen, Lock Screen, and Control Centre widgets for quick and easy access.
- Timers & Alarms: a new Pomodoro timer and enhanced alarm controls make it easier to focus, wind down in the evening, or wake up gently with nature. iOS 26 required for AlarmKit support and even more reliable alarms.
- Handoff: pick up where you left off and move seamlessly between your devices.
- Philips Hue Bridge Pro Support: expanded smart lighting support for that ultimate immersive experience.
- Improved Siri Integration: use Siri to play portals, search the Library and interact with Portal using on-screen awareness.
- Orientation Enhancements: landscape views supported on iPhone, portrait on iPad.
- Window Resizing: supported on iPhone and iPad.
This update represents one of the biggest steps forward since we launched and we couldn’t be more excited. 4.0.1 Sep 21
Liquid Glass requires iOS 26/iPadOS 26 & up.
- Circadian Flow: rooted in circadian science, you can now sync Portal with your local time of day. Circadian Flow plays a curated sequence of portals that follow the rhythm of the world outside - from energising mornings to restorative evenings - gently aligning your internal clock with the natural flow of the day.
- Streaming Playback: portals can now be played instantly without downloading first, making it quicker and easier to immerse yourself in nature.
- Playable Collections: you can now play entire collections and enjoy a seamless journey from one place to the next. Choose your preferred duration, and Portal will transition from one scene to another.
- Audio Normalisation: new controls balance volume levels between portals, creating smoother transitions.
- Favourites: save the portals you love most in one place.
- Search: finding the places you’re looking for, or discovering new ones just got a whole lot easier.
- Widgets: new Home Screen, Lock Screen, and Control Centre widgets for quick and easy access.
- Timers & Alarms: a new Pomodoro timer and enhanced alarm controls make it easier to focus, wind down in the evening, or wake up gently with nature. iOS 26/iPadOS 26 & up required for AlarmKit support and even more reliable alarms.
- Handoff: pick up where you left off and move seamlessly between your devices.
- Philips Hue Bridge Pro Support: expanded smart lighting support for that ultimate immersive experience.
- Improved Siri Integration: with support for media playback, search and on-screen awareness, makes finding just the right portal for the moment effortless.
- Orientation Enhancements: landscape views supported on iPhone, portrait on iPad.
- Window Resizing: supported on iPhone and iPad.
This update represents one of the biggest steps forward since we launched and we couldn’t be more excited. However, none of it would be possible without the incredible patience and support of our team of beta testers - from the bottom of our hearts, thank you! Their feedback, bug reports, and good humour have helped us create something that we’re incredibly proud of - and are delighted to share with you today :)

Massive thanks go out to Alyx from the USA who recently helped us track down an elusive bug that was causing Portal’s audio and visuals to cut out! In truth, without his help we’d still be in the dark - what a legend!
*Bug Fix*
Downloading lots of portals at the same time now no longer causes audio playback to cut out and visuals to disappear.
*Improvements*
The awesome folks at Nanoleaf have kindly agreed to extend Portal customers’ exclusive discount across their full range of products. New discount code is available in Portal’s lighting setup.
Thanks again to Alyx and the Nanoleaf team - you both light up our world in your own way :)

Happy New Year everyone!
We’ve been working hard to get our MacOS beta ready for release, it’s not quite there yet but we’re confident that we’re not too far off now - we’ll keep you posted.
In the meantime, a couple of pesky audio bugs have popped up following the latest iOS & iPadOS releases. So here are a couple of fixes that will get things sounding great again!
- Sometimes Portal could get into a state where Static and Dynamic Spatial Audio would play at the same time, this has now been fixed.
- We’ve clarified the messaging when headphones stop sending motion data (required for Dynamic Spatial Audio) and added an FAQ explaining how to fix the issue.
- Fixes an issue where Portal’s audio controls could become unresponsive following a Siri conversation.
As always we are super grateful to everyone that raised these with us and helped us get to the bottom of things.
If you’ve encountered any bugs or have any feedback, please don’t hesitate to let us know - we’d love to hear from you.
PS. We’re still on the lookout for more people happy to help us test our Mac beta. All that’s required is a Mac and a love of immersive sound and visuals! If you’re interested, please drop us a line at hello@portal.app

3.5.4 02/09/2022
We've got a treat for your ears...the magic of Dynamic Spatial Audio has arrived!
-----
With Portal our ultimate goal is to deliver an experience that allows you to truly escape and "feel like you're there" in the midst of some of the world's greatest locations.
Sound has always been at the heart of this experience and we've been thrilled by recent advances in Spatial Audio technology that have allowed us to push what's possible in terms of realism and immersion.
If you own a pair of AirPods Pro, AirPods Max or 3rd generation AirPods this release adds support for Dynamic Spatial Audio which uses head tracking technology to anchor the soundscapes around you. If you turn your head your virtual surroundings will remain in place, just as they would do in real life.
It's been a labour of love and the culmination of almost 12 months of Research & Development, requiring us to completely re-engineer our entire sound production and delivery pipeline, all in the pursuit of a natural & realistic experience.
We've worked with the world's greatest Spatial Audio field recordists to re-release a large proportion of the library with full support for Dynamic Spatial Audio and we've partnered with Atmoky, a world-leading Spatial Audio R&D company, to implement state-of-the-art Spatial Audio rendering within the app that's specifically tailored for natural ambiences.
Even if you don't have a pair of AirPods that support headtracking you'll still hear the benefits over the coming months as we release new content using the upgraded technology and further push what's possible through both headphone and speaker playback... :)

Additionally, 3.5.3 includes the following changes:
- We've added more details about what's included in Portal Premium.
- The audio controls now fit better on smaller iPad screen sizes.
- Launching Portal with 'mix with others" turned on whilst another audio source is playing no longer pauses the other App's audio.
- Shortcuts and Quick Actions now automatically start playback if Portal was previously in a paused state.
3.5.3 11/05/2021
Andy, Nick & Stu
*Previously in v4.1.0*
