Bit of a learning curve…worth it

This was one of those apps that initially I downloaded on a whim, played with for a bit, scratched my head, and moved on. Seemed like a neat idea, but I had no clue how to use it. After a few months I revisited it, took a little time to learn it, and became quite impressed. The ability to tweak the f out of time signatures per track is amazing on its own. Velocity editing and ratcheting is great. This app is extremely flexible in how beats can be programmed. I do wish there was the ability to build your own kit, and saving/exporting is not that intuitive, but the rest of the app still merits 5 stars.

First off- it’s a drum sampler with unique controls, no auv3, and zipped audio exports (lol) but still- it’s free and a blast to play with. patterning 2 on iPad is better, but it’s also not free. Have an iPhone? Download patterning, draw various circles for each drum part, click on pencil, tweak parameters the same way, by filling each drum part- the more color you paint, the more Aggro the sound, less color you paint, the duller it gets. Now hit randomize!!!!!!!!!

First off- it’s a drum sampler with unique controls, no auv3, and zipped audio exports (lol) but still- it’s free and a blast to play with. patterning 2 on iPad is better, but it’s also not free. Have an iPhone? Download patterning, draw various circles for each drum part, click on pencil, tweak parameters the same way, by filling each drum part- the more color you paint, the more Aggro the sound, less color you paint, the duller it gets. Now hit randomize!!!!!!!!!

I paid for this app because there was no demo. The features seem impressive at first glance but due to the fact that there is a 16 step limit to patterns you can’t build loops up. Really a design flaw.If you want to put 8th notes or 16th notes in a pattern then you will be limited only 16 steps of 8th notes or whatever increment you chose. This is problematic and you can only begin to understand how limiting it is once you begin to build patterns. For example: If you set your kick pattern to 8th notes and your hihat pattern to 16th notes, your hihat pattern will play through twice before a single bar has passed. So you can really only design 2 beats of your bar and it will just repeat itself to finish out the bar.

This app helped me get out of a creative slump!!!! I’m a former student of one of the creators of this app and I knew it would be cool, but I didn’t expect it to have so many options for saving and exporting— I can just create and save a sick pattern, export to Ableton, and manipulate clips and record even more with less effort than an entirely new Ableton project. Really awesome for those of us who are rusty with DAWs. Can’t wait to make more music!!!!!
