I withdrew my last assessment of the app and decided that I needed to revise it. While finding other chess players in the real world to play, I have discovered that this app is great for a beginner like me as is teaching me how to move, what traps to look for and how to refine and learn new strategies. Playing the computer is challenging but very educational. I once bought a copy of Bobby Fischer’s book of how to play chess. It was trying to read through an advanced chemistry text book. Nothing made sense. Then a couple of weeks ago I found a book by BK Publishing called “Chess for Children.” It’s more my speed and I can practice moves I learn in the book on this app. This app also allows you to play yourself. This is a big plus because it give me a chance to go slow and see how each move works and what the result of the move I’m learning is. The app also has many 2-3 moves to checkmate the opponent which are a good exercise too. You can set it up to play with two (in person), or you and someone else on line if you can find someone. $2.99 lets you lose the adds for a year. You can change the colors of the board and the chess pieces. When you play the computer, you can change the difficulty from 1-10. (1 being the beginner level and 10 being the very advanced level.) It’s well worth having on my iPad and iPhone and is a great way to pass time when you have to wait an airplane, doctor’s appointment or the dentist. I would recommend this to anyone with a deep interest in chess or in learning chess. With a good basic book about chess, you will have a winning combination!
After 50 Years, Just What I Needed In a Chess App
HonokaaBob
Over 50 years ago in college, there was a group of us, both men and women, that played chess to wile away the hours on a Saturday night. We were socially inept and playing chess was the apex of our social life along with drinking cheap wine and playing folk music. Yes, we were nerds!!! We enjoyed the camaraderie and happily, many of our group are still in contact with each other today. We also considered ourselves quite the chess masters although in retrospect we were all pretty lackluster in skills. This “App” is very easy to set up and intuitive to operate. I set the difficulty scale at “low” and win about half the games. So now I’m playing chess again, drinking “expensive” wine, and playing the ukulele. Upward and onward!!
Not too bad, odd bug though

I like the app overall. Fun way to burn some time against a computer or do puzzles. The online match system seems dead. I have only gotten one match after attempting to get one for days. Also wishing the difficulty slider had a bit more info. The jump from one setting to another seems absolutely massive. At 1 the cpu blunders left and right. At 2-5 I cannot tell the difference between these numbers, difficulty jump is massive from 1. 6-10 is an even bigger jump but I can at least see a difference from 9-10 I am seeing an odd bug occasionally though that is extremely frustrating. In some cases I am seeing a pawn capture horizontally. In one case I moved a rook to capture a pawn only for it to move left and capture my rook. Not sure if the game got confused and thought the pawn was on the previous space. Overall confused by this and frustrated as it can instantly cost a winning game.
Good, but could be better

This is a good app to play chess with friends and other competitors via the net. Nice graphics that makes you feel like you are sitting in front of a real chess board. You can rotate the board to look at it from different angles. Nice. Has not crashed yet and seems stable and reliable. What could be better: Add a feature that allows the player to confirm if he really wants to resign or give up. A friend of mine has accidentally resigned from two games that were very competitive. No way to recover. Gone. Annoying. It would be nice to also have a little red dot show up next to the app when it is your turn. just like in many other games. While you get a notification, if you miss that, the only way to find out is go in and check the active games.Still a very nice app that I like. It could just be a bit better if the above issues would be addressed.
Developer Response
Hi Eric, nor sure what you meant but the app is requesting a confirmation when you choose the option to resign. Also the app shows if it is your turn by highlighting your pawn near your name and resuming your timer.
* Added online status for each player
* Bug fixes and UI improvements
