Room for improvement

It would be very helpful to have an index for large scores with multiple movements. Otherwise it’s just endless scrolling until you find the right spot in the score. Perfect example: try to quickly find no. 54 in part 6 of Bach Christmas oratorio... it’ll take some time (especially on a phone screen).

Otherwise a great idea that needs better tech-execution. Thanks and can’t wait to see how this app grows over time. Will raise my rating when I see it!

Fantastic for educators

While I had known about nkoda since its release, I didn’t really sink my teeth into it until it became the best solution for teaching my graduate seminar. Their library is fantastic and while there are some annoying omissions that are beyond their control at the moment (Universal Edition, specifically), I have rarely had trouble finding what I need. I have small nitpicks: they have a taxonomy problem — an issue I’ve addressed with them and they’ve explained is more on the part of the original publisher — and for my organizational skills, it makes having a large library a problem. I’m also hoping for expanded tools within the actual score. I know most of their decisions stems from the needs of players (of which I am one) and that my critiques come from music academia and are slightly lower on the list. But they have been more than responsive in listening to my thoughts and issues. The team is engaged and are always adding new things to the platform.

nkoda can only grow from here but they have already done an amazing job.

Nice collection would be nicer with more 20th and 21st-Century scores

This is one of a very small handful of apps that I am willing to pay a subscription for—as long as I can afford to. Sheet music is so absurdly expensive that much of what I can get here is practically unobtainable otherwise.

The zoom and note-writing features are well-implemented: it is possible to zoom in almost to the pixel, so handwriting can be made very very tiny. Extremely useful for studying. It could *almost* replace paper scores for me entirely if it were possible to support system Dark Mode on iOS 13+. Reading a shining white LED screen becomes painful for me after just a few minutes, so for now I can only use the app this way intermittently.

I would also like to see the inclusion of much more 20th-Century and later work, as very few of my searches of modern composers return results—no Cage, Penderecki, Ligeti, Varèse, or Oliveros, to mention just a few. I realize licensing might be a financial challenge. Perhaps some publishing houses and estates could be persuaded that making scores more accessible would be a good thing? Reasonable prices are reasonable, but holding art for ransom should be a crime against humanity. Tell them I said so. :)

Dark Mode and more contemporary scores would be reason for me to consider an annual subscription: this is the one, single, and only app I would be willing to spring that much cash for up front. Congratulations.
