Gentler Streak’s approach to fitness is carefully crafted for balance. Instead of pushing you to your limits, the app rewards little bits of exercise throughout a day, like dog-walking or daily chores. By suggesting rest days and providing delightfully designed charts and graphics, Gentler Streak showcases a level of care that kindly moves us forward.

I am Jiang Linhan, a university student in China. I actually didn't like exercising before, but after a semester of sitting for long periods, I gained 10 kg. So I need to lose some weight. I discovered that dancing in Apple Fitness+ is suitable for me, and I dance every day. However, sometimes I don't know how long I should dance or if I should do another 30 minutes. The gentler option gives me a suitable reference indicator, like the progress bar on the homepage, which helps me understand whether I’ve met my daily exercise goals or if I haven’t done enough. It allows me to arrange my life easily and prevents me from overexerting myself and causing muscle strains. Also, the Apple Watch is compatible, but I prefer to stay consistent with Fitness+ and use Apple's official fitness app. I don’t have any other reason for this preference. However, I have to say that it offers many features, and most of them are free. As a student, I don't have much pocket money and can't afford the premium version. But the app developers have been kind enough to leave the essential homepage progress bar and widgets available for free users. I really appreciate that! 👍 Thank you for your development!
Amazing, but requires user involvement to have real value

I’ve been using this app for a couple of years, and it is by far the best fitness tracker I’ve found. I’ve been able use Gentler Streak to find fitness that’s sustainable while managing chronic illness, rather than being pushed to burnout with arbitrary goals. I love that the developers have continued to integrate more health data as it’s become available, and I’m excited to see how the app keeps evolving. The only reason I can’t give this app 5 stars is that for non-cardio strength exercise (specifically yoga, for me) the perceived exertion that the app applies is way, way off. Every yoga class I take, the app registers as “extremely light,” even if I’m sweating bullets, can’t regulate my breathing, and my muscles are burning. If I don’t go in and update that to how hard the session really feels, I would be headed in the wrong direction in a serious way, pushing too hard and going straight into PEM. I can definitely understand why it’s hard to quantify effort with exercise where the difficulty doesn’t have an immediate link to heart rate, and honestly I’m not sure if this is something that really has a fix, but that’s been my only frustration with this app. Bottom line, if you are looking for a way to sustainably build fitness (especially if you’re managing fatigue and chronic illness), this app is a life changer; just make sure you’re digging into the details and making sure that the assumptions the app is making are correct.

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with Gentler Streak. I feel you on the RPE for the yoga workouts. We’ve explored smarter ways to improve this, but finding a reliable and scalable automated solution has proven very tricky - if it were easy, someone would’ve probably cracked it by now😅 For now, manual adjustment remains the most practical and accurate approach. Wishing you a pleasant fitness journey, Vid

Update: while I still wish GoGentler would consider activity outside of recorded workouts, the new insights have been much better AND I so appreciate that they made the cycle tracking part of the free account. It’s a crucial insight for people who menstruate and I’m grateful they took that feedback into account. I subscribed to Gentler Streak for a year and really enjoyed some of the data. I did end up letting the subscription expire because I feel I have a better handle on my own training load now. On the positive, the app is well designed and I do feel like it was pretty decent at knowing when I needed to work vs rest, especially at first. However, once I got in a routine of regular workouts, it kept telling me to work harder to maintain my streak. Doing 30-60 minutes of strength training 3-4x per week and walking a lot seems like it should be plenty to keep me fit, but once Gentler Streak adapted to that routine, it started pushing me to do more and more in a way that felt unsustainable. I just returned from a 10-day trip to Europe, where we walked minimum 20K steps a day. I know the point of the app is to add more than just apple’s rings, but throughout that entire trip, the messages kept telling me to work out more and eventually “lost” my streak. I don’t mind that of course, but it’s wild that it can’t consider that I was walking 10 miles a day. I wish it would take activity outside of recorded workouts into account.
Developer Response
Hi! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with Gentler Streak. We have added the option to add the non-recorded steps to your Activity Path calculation. If you have that enabled, the total number of steps should be included in the calculation. The other thing regarding the pushing and that being unsustainable, it may have something to do with the RPE settings. Overdoing the RPE or changing it on all workouts can have that effect. If you want, I'm happy to take a look and help you set it up correctly. Let me know at support@gentlerapps.com. Thanks, Vid
