Metra Times
Live Metra train tracking
Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Live tracking that updates on the Lock Screen even when the app is closed. See your next Metra departure the instant you open the app.
Metra Times is a fast, clean way to see when your next Metra train leaves: a live departure board for every Metra line in the Chicago region.
Build a board around how you actually commute. Favorite the routes you ride and they're one tap away, with live status the moment you open the app.
FEATURES
• Live departure board for all Metra lines
• Network map: see every Metra line and tap any station for live departures
• Track a train and watch it on your Lock Screen. A Live Activity counts down to arrival and advances stop by stop as the train moves, even with your phone locked
• Favorite the trips you ride for a board that's all yours. Where two lines serve the same trip, you see both together
• Full schedule browser: pick any line, station pair, and date
• Real-time service alerts
• Dynamic Island support
• Choose your look: a clean classic board or a split-flap departure-board theme
• Get-off alerts: be notified N stops before your destination, even when your phone is locked
• Precise on-board tracking (optional): once you confirm you're riding, your phone's location makes get-off alerts more reliable and can detect boarding automatically

1.8.1 Oct 1
Metra Times is built for iPad now, not stretched to fit it.
• Every journey you have saved sits in a sidebar with its own live next departure, beside one journey's full departure board
• Pick a journey on the left, read it on the right, instead of scrolling past the trains you are not catching
• Portrait or landscape, on every iPad from the mini to the 13 inch
• The timetable browser, the network map, service alerts and the Home Screen widget all come with it
Also in this release, on iPhone and iPad both:
• If you use Get-off alert with Precise on-board tracking, the boarding prompt now appears when you reach your station even if the app was closed. That was exactly the case where it used to stay silent.
• Asking Siri for your next train, or walking into your station with the app closed, no longer loads your whole departure board in the background. The app uses less of your data when you are not looking at it.
1.8.0 Sep 20
Ask Siri when your next train is, without opening the app.
• Say "Hey Siri, next train in Metra Times" and hear your next departure, with the delay if there is one
• Name a journey Home or Work on the Board, then ask for it by name: "next train home in Metra Times"
• It reads the timetable already on your phone, so it still answers with no signal, and checks for delays when it can
• You can run it by hand from the Shortcuts app too
It needs a journey saved on your board, and no new permissions. It never uses your location.
Also in this release: a late train now stays at the top of your board until it actually leaves, instead of dropping into Departed at its scheduled time while it is still boarding. If one does leave, the Departed list fills back up rather than showing one row short.
1.7.0 Sep 10
Near You: the board now reacts to the station you are standing at.
• Walk up to a station one of your saved journeys leaves from, and that card is marked and stays open
• At any other Metra station, the board shows that station's next departures instead, so you can catch a train you never saved
• It takes one location reading when you open the board, on your phone. Nothing about it is sent anywhere, and you can turn it off in Settings
Late trains now behave the way you would expect:
• A train running late stays at the top of your board until it actually leaves, instead of greying out at its scheduled time while it is still boarding
• The countdown includes the delay, so "in 8 min" means eight minutes, not eight plus whatever the chip says
• A train that just left shows how late it was, which is what you want when you are meeting someone off it
Your board is easier to manage:
• Name a journey "Home" or "Work" and that name shows on the board and in the widget
• Add the return trip in one tap from Edit board
• Search when picking a station instead of scrolling past forty of them
• The map has a line legend, and tapping a badge highlights that line
Also in this release: the board warns you when a holiday runs a Sunday schedule, the drawer leads with when your train departs, and the footer now tells you when live data was last checked instead of showing the schedule build time.
1.6.1 Sep 4
A Home Screen widget, so you can see your next trains without opening the app.
• Add the widget, pick one of the journeys already saved on your board, and it shows the next departures
• Two sizes. The larger one lists the following trains too, each labelled with its line
• It works offline. The widget reads the times your app already has, so it keeps answering with no signal
Also in this release, clearer wording when a board has nothing to show:
• If you saved a trip between two stations that no single train connects, the board now says so plainly, instead of reading as though today's service had been cancelled
• When a trip is finished for the day, the wording now says "between these stations", which is right when more than one line runs your trip
• On the Schedule tab, if the line you are browsing is not running that day and another line serves the same two stations, it now suggests trying a different line rather than only another date
1.6.0 Aug 31
Some stations are served by more than one Metra line. Chicago OTC to Clybourn runs on both UP-N and UP-NW; Chicago Union Station to Western Ave runs on MD-N, MD-W and NCS. Your board now knows that.
• A saved trip shows every line that runs it, in one card, in time order. The next departure is the next train, whichever line it is on
• Each row is labelled with its line, so you always know what you are boarding
• This applies to trips you already saved. Nothing to set up
Also in this release, a round of fixes from a full review of the app:
• Departure times now grow with your text size setting in the classic theme, instead of staying small while everything around them scaled up
• On the map, the dismiss button on a line's label no longer sits underneath the settings button
• Trains running after midnight now show their live status in a station's departures, the same way they already did on your board
• Opening a line from the map now picks a destination that actually has trains, instead of a branch that can be dark on weekends
• More reliable tracking when you start or stop it quickly, and fewer repeat "On board?" prompts while you are already riding
1.5.6 Aug 18
This release is mostly about accessibility.
• The network map now works with VoiceOver. Every station and line is reachable, and opening a station's departures works the same way it does by tapping
• Fixed text that could overlap or run past the edge of a card at the largest accessibility text sizes, on the board and in Settings
• A line with missing color data no longer shows as a blank white badge or blends into the map background
• Added Rate, Send feedback, and Support links under Settings, so it is easier to tell us when something is wrong
1.5.5 Aug 14
Maintenance update.
• Fixed a get-off alert that could arrive at the start of your trip instead of near your stop
• Improved how the network map loads route data
• Updated privacy policy: we now keep an anonymous record of which data files are requested, so we can tell which train lines the app is actually used for. Each record holds only the date, the time, the file path, and the status code. It contains no IP address, no device identifier, no user agent, and no location, it cannot be linked to you or to a device, and it is deleted after 90 days. It is never used for advertising and never shared. Full details are in the privacy policy.
1.5.4 Aug 11
Live tracking and Lock Screen improvements:
• Fixed on-board tracking incorrectly thinking you'd left the train on lines with curves or branches, like the McHenry spur, and quietly stopping mid-ride
• Fixed the Lock Screen Live Activity truncating long station names and losing the arrival time
• The Live Activity countdown no longer ticks by the second, so it's easier to read at a glance
1.5.3 Aug 2
Schedule accuracy and alerts, improved:
• Fixed an issue where the board could still show trains on a day a line wasn't actually running, such as a planned track closure
• Service alerts now cover every Metra line, not just Union Pacific Northwest
• New: choose to see alerts for just your favorite lines or all of Metra, right from the Alerts tab
• The board and schedule now say plainly when a route has no service that day, instead of implying the last train already left
1.5.2 Jul 26
Reliability improvements for the Lock Screen Live Activity:
• The Live Activity now reliably shows Arrived and cleans itself up after your ride, instead of sometimes lingering on the Lock Screen
• Fixed a display issue where the countdown could briefly read a broken "now" instead of a clean status
1.5.1 Jul 23
This update adds Precise on-board tracking, an optional feature that uses your location while you ride to make get-off alerts more reliable, even in the background:
• Turn on Precise on-board tracking and Get-off alert in Settings, then confirm you're riding when prompted, or let the app detect it automatically as you board
• Get-off alerts fire reliably even when your phone is locked or in your pocket
• Tracking reverts to standard mode automatically if you're not actually on the tracked train
• Your location never leaves your device
1.5.0 Jul 21
This update fixes several issues:
• Switching lines in the Schedule tab now always shows upcoming trains. Some lines could look empty before.
• Fixed "Route unavailable" when tracking certain trains, including Ravinia Park service.
• Favorite boards no longer disappear if the schedule briefly fails to load.
• Station departures on the map now show every line that serves a station.
1.4.6 Jul 17
Fixed an issue where get-off alerts could sometimes arrive twice for the same trip. Improved reliability of get-off alert timing.
1.4.4 Jul 14
Minor UI tweaks and stability improvements.
1.4.3 Jul 11
Live train tracking is now more accurate and reliable:
• Get-off alerts fire at the right stop, timed to your train's real position — and now come through even while you have the app open.
• Late trains are clearly marked late, with arrival times that reflect real-time delays.
• The in-app view and your Live Activity stay in sync as the train moves.
• Live predicted arrival times on the per-stop rail, from Metra's real-time feed.
• Clearer wording when live data isn't available yet, so the countdown never looks stuck.
• Tap your Live Activity to jump straight to the tracking view.
• The progress bar and "stops away" count work on every Metra line.
1.4.2 Jul 4
• The Dynamic Island now shows your tracked train in a slimmer pill.
• Fixed a Schedule bug where you couldn't reach the stations at the very top or bottom of a line's list.
1.4.1 Jul 2
Introducing the Map.
• A new Map tab shows every Metra line, with your saved lines highlighted.
• Tap a station for live departures; tap a line to jump to its schedule.
• Locate yourself on the map with one tap.
• Schedule now opens to a favorite route automatically.
1.4.0 Jun 30
Get-off alerts and Live Activity improvements.
• New: get-off alert — get a notification N stops before your destination, even when the app is in the background or your phone is locked. Set your heads-up window in Settings → Alerts.
• Live Activity now stays in sync with the app's view while you're using the app.
• Fixed: Live Activity could incorrectly show "Arrived" for a train that was still several stops away.
• Fixed: tapping the Live Activity banner after the app was idle could open the app with no tracking.
1.3.0 Jun 29
Two looks, your choice.
• New "Flapboard" theme: a split-flap departure-board style with glowing amber tiles, the way the old station boards used to flip. Turn it on in Settings → Appearance.
• Classic stays the default, so your board looks just as it did until you decide to switch.
• Your theme carries through to the Lock Screen Live Activity.
• Plus: smoother scrolling and a cleaner date picker in the Schedule tab.
1.2.0 Jun 28
A big polish and accessibility update:
• Full Dynamic Type — the board scales with your text-size setting
• VoiceOver: every departure is now a labeled, tappable control, and live status is spoken (never color alone)
• The next-train card leads with the countdown, so your time-to-train reads at a glance
• Live tracking puts the train's current position front and center
• Clearer service alerts — the most urgent first — with calmer on-time styling
• Faster, more consistent visuals throughout
