Ripplemaker: a West Coast Flavored (Semi-)Modular Synth

The freedom and versatility of a modular synth in a stylish mobile package.

In typical West Coast fashion the available modules, such as complex oscillator, lowpass gate, FM, mathematical utilities and slope generator, are designed for exploration and experimentation. The virtual patch cables will let you take your sound wherever you want to take it, from morphing basslines to evolving generative drones.

A modular playground
Even if you’re not familiar with modulars, wavefolders or control voltage you can dive right in, because all modules are prewired; offering a powerful monosynth without using a single cable. Then whip out the virtual cables and start patching. Ripplemaker is designed for fun - big enough to lose yourself into, yet intuitive enough to not get lost.

Standalone sequencer goodness
Sometimes you want to get away from your DAW and just play. That’s why Ripplemaker, beside being an AU plugin, also comes with a standalone sequencer app that helps you get creative. It has a random pattern generator with scale locks, a realtime probability-based mutation engine and it syncs with your other apps and hardware via Ableton Link or MIDI Clock.

Connectivity beyond cables: obviously in a modular synth it’s all about cables. But Ripplemaker takes connectivity to the another level:
- AUv3 (Audio Unit Plugin) Extension for use in iOS DAWs
- Universal design (works on iPad 4+, iPhone 5S+, iPod Touch 6G+)
- CoreMIDI, Virtual MIDI, Bluetooth MIDI,
- Audiobus 3, including AB3 MIDI IN+OUT and State Saving
- Ableton Link
- MIDI Clock Sync
- WAV export, MIDI file export, AU preset export

What’s New

Again, currently best apps on market

Just wanted to say thanks, and that on a 3rd gen IPad Pro, you are one of, or possibly the only developer that is good enough that all of your apps are FULLY functional, I’ve wasted like 200 bucks on apps that half/don’t work at all on new devices/ios12. You give me hope that I didn’t waste 1400 bucks on an IPad that I mainly got for mobile audio production. Moog pooped the bed, sugarbytes pooped the bed, and so did most others, there are few apps that are fully functional and don’t have audiobus zombie background use and 70% cpu usage. I seriously have to hard reset brand new IPad after attempting to use 30 dollar apps.
Thanks again keep it up, cuz you totally win at this point in the app game. You made higher paid devs look completely incompetent.

Surprising

This app is exactly what I was looking for. Versatile synth and sequencer. Nice modular patching. Extremely easy to use. I was able to start a patch on my iphone and transfer it to my iPad.

I like to make 3 min film cues and then add to or edit them elsewhere. What I immediately liked about this app is that its not TOO simple or TOO complex. It generates good random patterns too! And it’s all on one screen. Don’t let the simple interface fool you, this is a powerful unit. I love the west coast “energy” and tone. Its sounds great.

My complaints: 1) Ableton link won’t sync phone-and-pad (or anything) and the 2) Bluetooth crashes both units. 3) I wish it would tell you which patch is loaded like other synths do. 4) Also the two different load and save areas took getting used to. Hoping for some minor improvements but overall this is a great synth.

Unique among iOS synths, and great fun to play

Almost every iOS synth falls into the “East Coast” subtractive synth architecture pioneered by Moog. Ripplemaker stands alone as a “West Coast” synth more in line with a Buchla or Make Noise O Coast. As a consequence, the oscillator and filter are different in character and produce a unique sound. The app sounds great, has ‘normals’ — default signal routing if you choose not to patch it — and provides an enormous amount of fun. On top of that, the developer is an active member of the iOS music community, an enthusiastic user of his own and his competitors apps, always looking to improve, and very responsive to suggestions and feedback. Highly recommended!
