CELEBRATING WOMEN

Take Charge of Your Health

With the help of health and wellness apps, we’re now able to take ownership of our well-being like never before. Here are a few groundbreaking women-run options.

For tracking your period

Clue helps you gain insight into how your symptoms may be related.

Paying attention to your menstrual cycle can play a major role in understanding your body and overall health. With this in mind, founder Ida Tin created Clue. It maps cycle history, helps predict periods, determines cycle flow and length, and tracks any period-related symptoms—making it easier to inform a doctor if needed. With Clue Connect, one tap lets you share these details with a partner or friend.

For navigating menopause

Caria personalizes its advice based on the symptoms you share—and connects you with others adjusting to a new stage of life.

Founded by Arfa Rehman, Caria helps people going through menopause record their symptoms and gather insights. The beautifully designed app offers bite-size audio lessons on a range of menopause-related topics such as hot flashes, skin changes, and joint issues. It also has workouts, mindfulness exercises, recipes, and a network for connecting with others who are on the same journey.

For the journey to motherhood

Victoria Engelhardt created Keleya to provide a safe space for soon-to-be (and maybe-one-day) mothers. Expecting moms can find expert tips from midwives and health care professionals, and get reassuring answers to questions about symptoms and feelings in general. Members can access nutrition plans, motivating workouts, and pregnancy tracking tools.

For help unwinding

Ever had trouble relaxing after a hard day? Treat yourself to a little #SelfCare. Developed by Canadian tech-wellness pioneer Brie Code, this ultra-relaxing, game-like experience sets you in a cozy virtual bedroom surrounded by your “favorite sacred things.” Pet your adorable cat. Light a candle. Play a word game to spell out affirmations. #SelfCare is a safe space to chill.

For finding balance

The app Sanity & Self stems from cofounder Meng Li’s own struggles with keeping calm and carrying on after she became a mother. With over 1,000 audio sessions on mindfulness, fitness, sleep, relationships, mental health, and more, Sanity & Self includes a roster of therapists, life coaches, and sex educators. If you need one-on-one support, connect with someone right in the app.

For fending off stress

Start your daily self-care routine with Shine’s inspiring audio affirmations.

Founded by two women of color—Marah Lidey and Naomi Hirabayashi—the mindfulness app Shine was created to ensure inclusivity and representation in mental and emotional health. With motivational daily texts and a library of inspiring audio, the app uplifts in a way that’s casual and chatty. And it was a pioneer in the wellness field with its series of meditations for Black well-being.

For dealing with anxiety

Rootd helps you change your relationship with anxiety.

Developed by Ania Wysocka, Rootd walks you through the stages of a panic attack and offers guided visualizations and other techniques to help you manage symptoms. Should you find yourself experiencing an attack, tap the red emergency-contact button to quickly connect with a loved one.

For straight talk about mindfulness

Developed by Suze Yalof Schwartz, former fashion editor and founder of Los Angeles studio Unplug Meditation, this app offers hundreds of videos from over 70 teachers to help you through any situation life throws your way. Set meditation goals (and reminders to help you reach them), and keep a gratitude journal in the app so you can see how far you’ve come.

For tracking emotions and more

See how your physical and mental symptoms relate over time with Joyster.

Cofounded by designer Paula Barcante, Joyster makes it easy to keep a mental- and physical-health journal. Thanks to checklists of emotions, symptoms, food, and activities (just tap what you’re feeling, experiencing, eating, or doing), the app takes just a few seconds to create a comprehensive entry. After evaluating the information you’ve shared, Joyster provides insights that can help you discover the positive and negative influences in your life—and decide which habits to keep and which to break.

For nurturing your sexual health

A healthy sex life can do wonders for your well-being. That can be awkward to acknowledge, but Coral is trying to shift this mindset. Founded by sex-positive activist Isharna Walsh, the app helps you tune in to your desires and understand how to fulfill them. With candid articles, customized quizzes, and guided audio exercises and talks, Coral seeks to empower people with knowledge and confidence.
