So far so excellent

After reading some of the other reviews I was wary of trying this. I’ve used the Waitrose scan and pack service for a long time now but find the Sainsbury’s version even better. The scanning of barcodes within the app is very fast and accurate. So far all the prices have come up correct compared to what the shelf says too.

My only minor niggle is that my local store only has 8 self scan machines and of those only 1 is now dedicated to Smart Scan. There are often queues for these machines even at times when you’d expect it to be quiet. Whilst you can finish your shop and pay at any of the self scan machines it would be a really nice feature if you could just pay using Apple Pay directly within the app and not have to use a terminal at all. Not sure if that’s possible or how they’d know the difference between genuine customers and brazen shoplifters though! It would also be handy if any Nectar vouchers could be stored and redeemed from within the app. I often go out without my wallet as I use Apple Pay so frequently forget to take any paper vouchers with me.

App needs work and staff need training

Have used the App 5 times and on three occasions there have been problems. On the first occasion there was a long queue at the self service checkout because only three of the ten checkouts were open. This was frustrating because we had walked past four normal staffed checkouts with no customers. As we had a large shop, I had no desire to empty all my bags and get items scanned by an operator. On the second occasion we were asked to contact staff to get items checked, but the only staff member was busy. By the time she was free another customer had stepped up to our checkout and cancelled all items in our shop, but the staff were unable to process our transaction. After calling 5 separate members of staff the situation was eventually resolved but it took around 20 minutes. On the third problematic event we were again asked to contact a member of staff to check shopping, but the member on duty did not know what to do and had to call a further 2 staff members to resolve the issue. I have no issue with checks, but the member of staff on duty must be trained properly. Three problematic shops out of five is not a good record.

Operational problems ruin the experience

I had been using SmartShop 4 times without any issues on a large shop, and really enjoyed not having to offload all my items at the till, and reload my bags a few minutes later.

Today, after my shopping, an error got displayed on my screen “we need to quickly check some of your items, don’t worry you’ll be on your way in no time”... Unfortunately, in the Sainsburys Upper Norwood Shop, only one member of staff was trained at the Self checkout to know how to deal with the problem, and none of 2 handheld devices he had to use to unblock me from paying didn’t work. I had to offload all my neatly packed bags at the till which was very frustrating, and made me lose all my trust in the service in a matter of minutes:

Why should I bother using the service if there’s a risk that I will have to use the till anyway at the end?

As a customer, how can I trust a system when I don’t understand the underlying reasons when I can proceed to pay, and when an error is going to get displayed?

How can I trust this service if your staff (the self checkout area dedicated staff) isn’t trained?

I hope you can improve this service, train your staff better, and provide them with handset that actually work, so they can troubleshoot issues!

Until then, I don’t feel like I will continue using the App, plus, the screen seems to be stuck showing this error message now, since I couldn’t terminate the shop.
