Terrible App considering its 2018
Ok, so the app does function - most of the time. I have had a couple of times where I have had to remove the hub and re-set it up to work again. But I can live with that minor annoyance. My issues with it are mainly that in this day and age it should be much more user friendly and customizable. Probably my biggest gripe with it is the lack of a portrait mode. Using a tablet in landscape mode, especially with the way the app is set up, is very difficult because all the buttons you use the most are right in the middle where you can’t reach with your thumb while holding the pad. Portrait mode would allow much easier reach ability and, if you think about it, a normal remote is tall not wide. Also, it would be nice to be able to arrange buttons and sections, like the number pad and arrow wheel, how you would prefer them. In other words make the app more customizable, which would make it more user friendly. Instead of a sidebar on each side for activities (left side) and devices (right side), I would prefer a drop down row of icons from the top that you swipe down to view, like the google home hub has for home controls. This would keep them hidden and out of the way except when I need them. In summary, I just think the app needs a redesign, with thought put into it, that brings it into this century...
Works good for what I use it for
I don’t use the home control bs so I can’t speak to that. I’m a retired computer professional, build my own computers and networks and I still could care less if this connects to a superfluous device like Alexa. This is my fourth Harmony remote and besides being stupid expense I think it works great as an entertainment center remote. It’s far more reliable and useful then the previous ones. I use the actual remote mostly but it sure is nice to be able to use my iPhone or iPad to control the entertainment center when remote is not handy. I had the Link and that was complete garbage. This combo seems to combine the best features of a remote like the 650 and an idevice app. This app actually consistently works instead of only when it felt like it like on the Link. The Help feature seems to work better as well. The only thing I don’t like is why the hell do I have to use the app in landscape mode on the iPad? There’s more room on the iPad screen then the iPhone and the iPhone uses portrait mode. I just find landscape mode awkward. The best part of the app though is it makes configuration much easier. Took me only a couple minutes to figure out how to add a custom command. So far I love it.
Incredibly poorly made app/product
I rarely leave app reviews but this app/product is so awful I feel it's my responsibility to warn others. It just doesn't work properly. I have spent hours configuring various 'activities' within the app to do things like turn on my TV, change video source, and raise/lower sound bar volume. These activities rarely work well, and frequently only part of the command will run, resulting in a situation where maybe my sound bar turns on but my TV does not, but harmony now believes both devices are on, so I have to go find my old TV and sound bar remote controls and manually sync everything up. When I try to control harmony via my Google home mini speaker, you need to be perfectly specific with your commands or harmony will not understand them, but harmony sometimes will just tell me that it's 'refreshing my account' instead of doing what I asked. This app and product have made my TV experience vastly more complicated and I'll probably end up throwing it all in the garbage. I am a software emgineer for a living, the people Logitech has working on this should be ashamed of the work they've turned in, it's a truly abysmal user experience.
Developer Response ,
Hi Apefragments, please accept my apologies for the inconvenience caused. If the devices are randomly not turning on/off via Activities, then this can be fixed by changing the delays. I'd request you to send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and let me know which Activity & device you're experiencing this issue. I'll look into your account and make changes (if needed) to resolve it. Best Regards, Peter (Harmony Remotes, Logitech).
