Seamless offline 1:50k topographic and satellite map of the North Island. Full backcountry navigation functions and data layers, including tracks, hunting boundaries.
This app provides complete offline topographic map coverage of the North Island of New Zealand from the LINZ Topo50 1:50k scale map series. The maps are all contained in the installation so there is no additional need for downloads, no need for phone or wifi signal, no slow server issues, no account signups, no missing tiles, and no additional map fees. Just install for seamless off-line zooming and panning across the whole island down to 1:50k scale. The app also includes built in 1:50k resolution satellite images and elevation data. Additional aerial imagery and vector map can be downloaded.
Other integrated data includes DOC hunting permit boundaries, DOC huts, campgrounds, and tracks, Te Araroa trails, Public Conservation Land boundaries, selected public road parcels, weather forecasts, and many others.
The app has a full suite of navigation functions including GPS location, compass orientation, distance to map locations, track recording and graphing, route creation and following, slope angle and hillshade overlays, import/export of gpx and kml files, search functions for named places and user data. Add and edit your own locations and routes and plot elevation profiles. Set proximity alarms. Share your location. Use your camera view to identify surrounding peaks and match with local topography. Uses an intuitive simple interface with one-touch access to all functions.
LINZ TOPO250 series maps are used at lower zoom levels for easier navigation.
Perfect for outback use out of cell phone range. GPS and maps function fully without phone coverage. No need to cache files in advance either as they are all fully installed with the app. Popular with trampers, hikers, runners, bikers, search and rescue (SAR), hunters, boaters, flying, paragliding, as well as survey applications.
Note that continuous use of GPS will run down the battery faster than when not using the GPS. The NZTopo50 app gives you full control over when GPS is used. The map can be used without GPS, intermittently with GPS for spot checking of location, continuously for logging while the app is open, or for continuous background logging when the phone is off.

Overall a good app exactly what I needed for however loses one star because resolution of image is terrible not sure if is necessary for app to function or is deliberate but overall just frustrating when wanting accuracy for land marks etc . compared to google maps or docs hunting map comparison. At the very least should be stated in description somewhere as to let people know especially it being a paid service just seems unlikely in this day and age that high resolution isn’t default
Worth every cent!

I never buy apps because I can always get something adequate for free. Even for maps, if I tried hard enough I can create my own offline ones with LINZ layers, but it would just not function as well and user friendly as this. It’s worth every penny and I’ve got both the north island and South Island ones and they’ve been very useful! I love being able to add way points so know exactly where pick up locations are ect or or cool things I see while out and about. It also has satillite base layers which are fantastic for laypeople who aren’t well versed in reading a topo and it’s also just reassuring sometimes too being able to look at the sat map and think ‘yep im definitely right here’. Thanks for such a fantastic app!
Good app. Features still to be added
Madman105mm
It works perfectly well in its current format. My only feedback is there are features still to be added to make it great. 1. Add a point by typing in the grid reference. This is much easier than the import process for single points. 2. Allow us to change the colours of waypoints. 3. Add additional grid formats, especially MGRS.
Developer Response
Hi, just getting back to you on this. The current update now has colour selection for tracks. Hope this helps. Coloured icons coming soon. Typing in a grid reference (and offsets from a grid reference) has always been possible, just a bit of a hidden option - tap on the compass bar will bring up a dialog. I'll put the military grid format on the list for the next update. Thanks and regards.
A few issues
KiwiRupes
A good app, however doesn’t work that nicely with an iPhone Xs - the virtual home button at the base of the screen blocks some of the buttons and the notch at the top of the screen covers over the map grid reference. If this was sorted, it would be much more convenientUpdate: A huge improvement to the app in the latest version, controls are much easier to use and the additional speed settings are much appreciated.
