To have a resource as renowned & respected as the Merck Manual at my fingertips via this app; is tremendously reassuring. The quality of care I can provide is improved when someone presents with unusual / rare signs & symptoms and my mind &/or my body is tired and a decision I'm going to suggest for a patient lacks that good gut feeling,"... this is the right path." Of course, I still present my assessments to a superior... but, in the future, I will be that senior clinician. A resource such as this is precious, because it allows me to give my best to every person who presents to me for care.Even though our hours "on the wards" during the years of internship, residency & fellowship have improved (compared to what they were 10 years & earlier) YET the total hours are still quite long when you recall the time that must be dedicated in preparation for clinical seminars, going on Rounds with Attendings, and more. So there will always be tired physicians and surgeons in training, thanks again for this great resource of information.

Incredible Content, Frequent App Crashes

Bad guy from the stawwaws
I am a PA student and find myself using the online version of the Merck Manual as my primary source of information to supplement my Clinical Medicine courses. The comprehensive yet concise information on nearly all diagnosis and treatment of disease contributes to the Merck Manuals status as the “Gold Standard” medical reference textbook. The fact that this wealth of knowledge is free to anyone with an internet connection is an invaluable gift to the world and something that should never go without praise. That all being said the App version is somewhat more primitive compared to the browser based manual, I like that it stores content locally for offline usage however it’s frequent App crashes become tiresome. Overall the Merck Manual is where my foundation of medical practice is based upon and I will be forever grateful and as a result I continue to recommend this IOS app and the browser version to anyone who listen.

When I found I could get the Merck Pro on my phone I was thrilled. I have referred to the Merck Manual for years and now have it readily available to answer questions from family and friends is wonderful. Wit it being able to make updates quickly and having more information at my finger tips is great. I am a retired RN and the family turns to me when they are unsure of how to approach the doctor for a problem. I can help them understand the problem and what to ask the doctor. Thank you for being with me and my family.

Good, but has problems

Before retiring, I had a male patient who seemed to meet criteria for caffeine addiction and perhaps intoxication. Often irritable, he always brought to his late-afternoon sessions a large container of heavily caffeinated soft drink. Researching “caffeine” in the Merck Manual app search box, the only option that I found at the time was on caffeine in pregnancy. I thought this arrangement erroneously conveyed the impression that only in the context of pregnancy—with its potential to damage another life—were caffeine addiction, intoxication, and dependence medically meaningful. I had earlier read a news item from a presidential campaign. It described a bedraggled group of reporters, which I presume included both men and women. They were following a candidate as—driven by electoral, not geographical, logic—he zigzagged by plane across the country. Sleep-deprived and driven by their deadlines, the reporters sustained themselves on caffeine to the point of delirium and collapse. The anecdote amusingly illustrated the nuttier side of American political reality. Still, l had to wonder what the negative, long-term after-effects might be on these reporters—each of whom brought to this horrific caffeine-fueled orgy their own medical vulnerabilities. A good search engine should be like a good index in a printed book—able to lead the reader to all the relevant information. This puts a heavy but noble burden on the compilers of the search engine for a comprehensive medical guide. KSshrink
