• no longer requires sign-in! : )

No longer requires sign-in to use the app. 5 stars for that alone, for now.
==> Still checking out the app; but just scrolling through the Headlines list of stories stutters badly on an iPhone 5s, even after turning off Auto-play Videos in the app’s own settings.

Previous review:
This app requires signing in from the start to see or do anything. That makes it a non-starter for us. (The previous “Google News” app, now removed from the App Store, does not require sign-in.) We keep seeing media articles elsewhere praising the supposed goodness of this replacement app, but they don’t mention that sign-in is required. So we foolishly keep coming back to check it out, several times now. Maybe having taken a moment to write this review, I’ll remember not to waste my time. Even if we were really willing to sign-in, not sure which of our various Google accounts we’d end up having to choose to use with this. Certainly not my own primary account, and we’re not willing to create yet another Google account at this point. (We haven’t tried out Google Assistant for the same reason.) After reading through the most recent, critical, detailed user reviews, we’re not sure we’d actually want to use this app anyway.

Not as good as it was

I recently came across an old laptop that I hadn't turned on in about three or four years. When I turned it on it briefly couldn't find a wireless connection and open to a four year old page of Google News, the nostalgia waved over me as I looked in awe at how much better it had been. It was layed out in a more traditional newspaper fashion and was so much more informative, easier to read, and just plain looked better. On the page were all the leading stories and interesting articles on the sides, you didn't even need to scroll the page to get the gist of that days news.
Now they have the same three stories by different writers hogging all the space, and the sides are the same Snopes like articles that only change once in three days.
They took what once was one of my most enjoyable parts of the day and ruined it by repeating the same articles over and over, not like any newspaper I've ever seen. I switched to the Huffington Post and now pay for an online subscription to the Los Angeles Times. Google News is garbage now.

Better than it began, but still needs improvement

After getting sick of Apple New and it’s “curated” content and weird organization scheme I’ve been giving Gnews another look. Including local news is a neat feature, but doesn’t work when you present yesterday’s weather and traffic. The Thumbs Up/Down is a nice idea, but I don’t really see much change in my content tbh. Some of the content served up is a head scratcher - articles on the opposite end of the political spectrum or things that have some relation to my location, but not really to my actual interests. My biggest complaint is the repetitive content and the glut of two bit and garbage “news” outlets and blogs. I don’t need 10 articles telling me the same thing over and over and over again. Clean up your feed, focus on legit blogs and outlets, adjust to user feedback more quickly, remove irrelevant articles (old sales, weather & traffic), and this app will be a winner.

Original review from years ago: This replaced Google Currents, and has been a disappointing experience. Currents was customizable in terms of content selection and was a minimalist reader for my chosen content. This new version puts emphasis on pay walled sites and serves up preconfigured sections (like a analog newspaper). They also removed the nifty drag gesture for minimizing the current selected article.
