What happened
Google has been the word that changed social media as well as the internet almost as soon as Google hit the internet. We no longer just "browsed" the internet or "searched", we now "googled" and soon just about everyone knew exactly what we were talking about. To google became the very personification of searching for info on the internet.
Not sure what happened but I just deleted google as it has gone wonky. At first I thought it was just my iPad but when all the other apps are working as well as they ever did...except for google, it had to be the app, or google. Can't give it five stars as a result. It seems even google has issues. Just doesn't seem as reliable as before.
Socratic
I have used the Socratic app for four years to help with schoolwork. It’s straightforward to use and answers questions within seconds of taking a photo. Today, while working on homework, I went into Socratic. The app told me they had moved to Google, I didn’t think much and downloaded the app. Trying to find where Socratic went in the Google app, I realized it is now “Google Lens.” I started to use Google Lens, and I truly hated the experience. It doesn’t give you a straight answer like Socratic did. You have to go to each website to look for the answer. Socratic will show you the answer with the website attached. The process for taking a timed homework assignment has been extended due to this change. Socratic was perfect and did everything most college or even high school students need. Fast answers with the website attached was perfect. If they had to search for the answer on the websites, all Google Lens does is write the question in the search bar. Now I had to delete Socratic (rip) and delete Google to download chat GPT. Besides Socratic, Google is a great search engine for everyday use but ruined a great app that helped tons of students.
Disappointing Image Scanning and Redundant Features
I recently tried out the Google app and found it to be quite underwhelming, particularly in terms of its image scanning functionality. Despite promoting this feature, it failed to deliver accurate results consistently. The app's inability to reliably scan and recognize images led to a frustrating user experience.
Moreover, beyond the image scanning feature, the Google app offers little added value compared to simply using Google's website. It essentially replicates the browsing experience, making it redundant to install the app if the image scanning feature doesn't work effectively.
Considering the primary selling point of the app falls short, it begs the question of why one should bother with it at all. Until Google improves and refines the image scanning capability, I see little reason to recommend this app over using the reliable and well-established Google search engine directly through a web browser.
