The Snapshot app is available to Progressive customers in select states who were offered and enrolled in the mobile version of Snapshot (not the plug-in device) when they purchased their policy.

Here's how it works: the app uses the technology on your phone to help you tailor your driving. It measures your driving data, like hard braking and mileage, and gives you personalized tips on how to improve. All you have to do is keep your phone with you as you drive – the app runs in the background, so you can just set it and forget it.

Has potential, but has issues

The app in itself seems to run fairly well. Unfortunately, the app also falls short on so many levels. My first major complaint is that the app doesn’t always seem to log trips accurately. More specifically, if you arrive at your destination, park the car, and go on your phone, the app logs your phone usage as if you’re driving and using your phone. For some reason, the app can’t seem to recognize if you’re driving or not when you are on the phone.

My next complaint is the lack of information that the app gives you. Ideally, the app should tell you things like how many times you were speeding, frequent lane changes, failure to yield or stop, etc,. In fact, the only info it gives is how many times you had a hard start or hard stop, and how many times you used the phone. An app that could be used to educate them on their driving habits only appears to be used as a tattletale on the driver.

My final major complaint is that the app requires location services to be on at all times, which drains the battery fast. There should be an option to use location services only when you open the app, primarily when you know you’ll be driving.

Can’t Categorize Properly

I have no problem with the app unfairly judging my driving. My real problem is that I RARELY drive - maybe one round trip per week - and it categorizes every time I’m in an Uber or a bus or a friend’s car as me being the driver. I know I have the opportunity to re-categorize it, but I often forget the app is running in the background and don’t remember to do it until a week later. At that point it tells me the trip is “too old to categorize.” It would seem a trip becomes too old after only 5 days. I assume they think this helps keep the information accurate because some people might forget whether they were driving or not. However, because I rarely drive, I have absolutely no problem remembering when it was me behind the wheel and when it wasn’t. As a result of this, I have about 10 “hard brakes” that weren’t actually me, and about 100 “phone uses” from times when I was the passenger (after having the app for only 2 weeks). At the very least, the app should send a notification prompting you to categorize drives before they become to old. But ideally, they would never become too old.

The app could use some work

I feel the app is pretty fair and is definitely a good representation of how you drive I first got it and read a ton of reviews and was nervous about being scored unfairly but I feel like everyone who is complaining about the hard breaks probably are at fault for the breaks being slammed for going way to fast and I know that some situations are like that at times but not every single day and I live in Atlanta where traffic is terrible almost everyday and people do sudden sharp turns in front of you but my real complaint about the app is it drains my battery entirely too much I will barely use my phone in some days and me just going on a 30 min drive will drain my phone to almost 60 and that’s just the beginning of the day. That’s a major problem especially when I have to be out all day and can’t charge my phone. Please progressive fix this because I want to keep the app and everything but I can’t keep my phone dying every 4 hours. Other than that I feel the app is pretty fair on how it rates and scores you just ease up on the driver in front of you and be mindful of others around and it won’t score you so harshly
