Ratings and Reviews
Awesome tool for travelers
If you are visiting a place where they speak a different language, or you simply want to communicate with someone in their language, this is the tool to use. Overseas, I recommend having this program and Google translator. Both of them are great, and although neither one is perfect, sometimes one does a better job translating mg than the other. Also, make sure you download the languages before traveling. You never know if you will have internet access when you need it, so better to have the language package available.
These translators are also getting better everyday. First time I tried them, they weren’t great, but were helpful. Nowadays, they do a great job in some languages. Spanish, Portuguese, French and Dutch modules are great, Chinese (Mandarin) isn’t that great, but did got us through. Again, download both, google and Microsoft sometimes they complement each other. While I had my wife’s phone with Google and mine with Microsoft, we got pretty high success. I guess sometimes one app gets some accents better than the other.
Again, both apps are greatly recommended for traveling overseas.
Thank you Microsoft!
Variable translation-speed could be improved dramatically...
...by giving a choice of four playback icons, (always visible), each with a number indicating its speed, so users would gain precise control over the audio playback of each tap - from “Normal-4”, “Slow-3”, “Slower-2” to “Slowest-1”. We CAN be trusted with making this decision for ourselves... really.
The current auto-slowing with each tap, is better than nothing, but the lack of control is so annoying, as to cause many of us to just keep that feature turned OFF, most of the time. (Oh... and BTW... with that switch being in Settings, it certainly isn’t quickly or readily available.) But, on the plus side, by implementing this suggestion, NO disable switch would be needed, anymore.
Issues with Some Languages, and Multiple Missing
Whenever I translate to and from Hebrew (true example), the punctuation gets completely messed up. Oftentimes I’ll hit the double arrows button to translate the results back to English to check. Whenever this happens (and this issue has improved some over time with updates), if there was a period at the end, one magically appears at the beginning as well, and so on with question marks, exclamation points, etc. (though not with commas). Also, several words in both Hebrew and other languages aren’t recognized and make radical transformations, including both common and proper nouns. In one incident, I repeatedly tried to translate a sentence containing “Galilee” (a region in northern Israel), and when I checked, “Galilee” had become “the cylinder!” I tried over and over with the same results. These were not the only times there was a glitch in the system, leading me to distrust Microsoft Translator with languages other than the Romance Languages (Spanish, French, etc.), with which I encountered much less error.
