DOWNLOAD THE APP
i honestly don’t care what anyone gotta say but today imma speak truth into people cause this app alone saved my life, swear down if I didn’t have this app I would be lost somewhere probably crying. I was literally sweating down my back trying to figure out a way home, I walked for god knows how long in literal circles and I said CIRCLES, and when I say non of my friends were helping me I mean it, one friend hung up on me which messed me up. So with my last hope- despair crawling through me head to toe I turn to google maps, at first I thought I was crazy because I used Apple Maps and that’s horrible, but nonetheless I carried through and yes I did make a few wrong turns but google GOOGLE MAPS saved me, it would either show me I'm going the wrong way or would create a whole new route depending on where I was at the current time. I tell you if you’re a person that doesn’t know your way around and get lost easily, don’t be like the old me please download google maps it will just save you time and tears. As well as shame 😕
Great. But beware the ‘AVOID TOLLS’ option! 😡
Always rely on Google Maps when we’re in the US, and especially liked the ‘Avoid Tolls’ option when you’re in a rental car and don’t want a hefty admin fee from the agency for going through a cashless toll. However I discovered last week that it’s not reliable - drove from Ohio to Staten Island NY with ‘avoid tolls’ selected, no warnings/pop-ups to say anything to the contrary, only to find ourselves at a $15 bridge toll to get over to Staten Island. Turns out there is no way to avoid a toll on to the island, fair enough, but if that’s the case PLEASE GOOGLE can you give us some notification of this when we select the route? I could easily have gone to an ATM and got the money before we got there if I’d known, but the only mention of the toll is hidden away down in the route description, and the top of it still says ‘avoid tolls’. No warnings whatsoever. So I’m now looking at a hefty fine/admin fee that would have been entirely avoidable if the nav info had been more accurate. Yes I know that all New Yorkers are aware there’s a toll, but it was a last minute trip and I trusted google maps to just avoid the tolls if that’s what was selected, or tell me if it wasn’t possible.
For future updates, the difference between cash and cashless tolls would be useful info, so we could avoid cashless tolls, but use cash tolls, as that’s what most people out of state are worried about.
Developer Response ,
Thank you for letting us know about this issue, and your patience as we fixed the problem. We appreciate it! With the latest update, Google Maps should now be working as usual.
Can’t delete or edit reviews.
Be careful what you write! Have a few reviews on Google maps that I posted before checking and realised I’d made things sound worse than I’d meant to. Went to delete one and edit another and was unable to do either. Google doesn’t have tech support anymore so I’m stuck, and, more unfortunately, so are the businesses I’ve inadvertently maligned. Simply doesn’t work.
Driving navigation is generally good, but…
Only encountered this recently while abroad. In UK it's fantastic. Abroad, if it doesn't recognise a location it will navigate to another with similar keywords but won't flag this up. In practice it meant a 15 minute walk taking 25 mins (fortunately I had an idea of where we needed to be; it had taken us to the wrong place completely but I could get us from there to our destination); had it been a longer journey or if we'd ended up really lost it could have really caused issues (it deletes the journey as you go so backtracking isn't an option). Lacks the functionality of Google web search, and hijacks the Safari browser in iOS making it impossible sometimes to work out where you're trying to find - I'm now trying to locate our next hotel in relation to its nearest station and maps keeps hijacking and giving me directions, which is not what I want. Then when I cancel the navigation it removes the search terms. I'm gonna have to delete the app and start again.
