Amazing app but
There is no doubt in my mind that when it comes to navigation apps, the mapping by google maps is way ahead of the competition however a couple of things I feel let the app down and make it feel out of date when comparing to the app to its competitors. Speed limits, with both Waze and Apple maps showing speed limits I feel this is a very useful feature that google maps is missing. The second feature I feel that is missing is when in comes to navigating roundabouts. Again when using waze or Apple maps you get a text indication showing which exit to take where as with google maps you will only get this indication verbally. Despite these two flaws, google maps is my go to navigation app and I do believe that the actually accuracy of the turn by turn navigation is 100x better than the competition and it’s this reason why google maps gets my vote
Great. But beware the ‘AVOID TOLLS’ option! 😡
Always rely on Google Maps when we’re in the US, and especially liked the ‘Avoid Tolls’ option when you’re in a rental car and don’t want a hefty admin fee from the agency for going through a cashless toll. However I discovered last week that it’s not reliable - drove from Ohio to Staten Island NY with ‘avoid tolls’ selected, no warnings/pop-ups to say anything to the contrary, only to find ourselves at a $15 bridge toll to get over to Staten Island. Turns out there is no way to avoid a toll on to the island, fair enough, but if that’s the case PLEASE GOOGLE can you give us some notification of this when we select the route? I could easily have gone to an ATM and got the money before we got there if I’d known, but the only mention of the toll is hidden away down in the route description, and the top of it still says ‘avoid tolls’. No warnings whatsoever. So I’m now looking at a hefty fine/admin fee that would have been entirely avoidable if the nav info had been more accurate. Yes I know that all New Yorkers are aware there’s a toll, but it was a last minute trip and I trusted google maps to just avoid the tolls if that’s what was selected, or tell me if it wasn’t possible.
For future updates, the difference between cash and cashless tolls would be useful info, so we could avoid cashless tolls, but use cash tolls, as that’s what most people out of state are worried about.
Very good, just some volume frustration
Hey, I must say this is a very good free app, it has improved greatly over the last 5 years and I certainly have come to prefer pretty much all aspects of it over iOS maps, only issue is that the music and navigation volumes are not independent. I ride a motorbike so I must use headphones for navigation, usually I do not like to have my music volume too high as I would like to be able to hear if there are hazards approaching (alerting only by their sound, e.g. Fire truck), but when the navigation voice over comes on, the volume is too low, sometimes I end up making the wrong turn, so I turn on the volume during the turn-for-turn notification, and google maps is then at an adequate level but this changing of the volume affects the music playing in the background, and suddenly when that round of google maps instruction is done, the music is blazing in my ears. Why are these two volumes attached, please could you make it separate, as the directions are essentially in app notifications, why don't you attach google maps volume to the ringer volume instead of the music volume, this would've much more convenient, or give it its own separate volume adjuster so that adjusting voice volume doesn't adjust music volume, thank you.
