WHEN it works, Fine. When it DOESN'T = GARBAGE

When I am watching TV and this is successfully streaming it is a highly effective solution for someone hard of hearing. However the thrive app is decidedly dysfunctional. It consistently will "lose" connection to my hearing aid. Despite turning on and off Bluetooth, repairing my hearing aids, unplugging and plugging in/turning on the TV streamer, I am still left with a non-functioning Thrive app in which I do not have any streaming. This is extremely upsetting as a member of the hearing impaired community, and it is hubris for Starkey to state that they have a functioning app when it is a 80 or 90% dysfunctional app.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for the feedback. The Apple ecosystem can let other devices on the same WiFi and cloud account connect to the hearing aids. If you have ever paired to another device and leave the Bluetooth on, that device can connect to the hearing aids. If you have another person on using the same cloud account and use hearing aids, it will kick the other hearing aids off. Turn off handoff, and audio handoff. It will help.

App w/potential if it worked consistently

Unfortunately the app fails to maintain a consistent connection to hearing aids even though they are reliably paired to iPhone or iPad. This means that the ability to customize settings or utilize the other sophisticated features built into the app is severely limited. Developer’s comments about turning on and off Bluetooth, etc. in response to reviews are decidedly unhelpful to everyday users who deserve a functional, stable interface. I hope that future updates will address these deficiencies. As of now this app fails to deliver what it promised which is great potential.
Additional information: Handoff is turned off. Yes, I have both iPhone and iPad. Both are continuously searching to connect resulting in rapid drain on battery especially with iPad. App should be able to handle more than one device at a time. Awful programming. On top of that, I am currently traveling with a friend who also has iPhone and iPad. Even though she doesn’t have Thrive app installed, her devices are constantly "searching" for my hearing aids under the accessibility settings draining her batteries as well. I have turned hearing aids off, stopped wearing them, trying to get batteries in hearing aids to die so that our devices are usable for the 2 week duration of our cruise. What a terrible experience.

Developer Response ,

I'm sorry for the experience. It is likely that your devices are connecting to another Apple device at the time you are attempting to use it. Only guessing because the lack of details on the situation. I would recommend turning off Handoff and test the results. You can work with your Audiologist to try and reproduce the issue while in the office. If they are able to simulate the results in office that means a solution can be found. I hope this helps you.

Why I'll never buy another Starkey hearing aid

I bought the Starkey hearing aids in 2021 after I lost an older hearing aid during COVID-19. I was told that I would always be able to find them since it had Bluetooth technology. The ONLY reason I went with the Starkey. Yesterday, when I was away from home, I dropped my hearing aid and was unable to locate it on either of my two iPads or iPhone. The hearing aid had been fully charged less than two hours previously. So it was not a low battery issue. However, as had happened frequently, the app and the hearing aid had failed to pair after the charge (or subsequently lost the Bluetooth pairing). So once again the Bluetooth did not function and my hearing aid is lost. THE MOST EXPENSIVE AND WORST HEARING AID I EVER HAD. UPDATE: Thank you for your concern. I don't know if in the same pocket or in my lap is close enough. As I stated previously, the app and the hearing frequently failed to pair and/or lost the pairing. One of the iPads showed it had not been connected for 4 months; the other 26 days. Although I had been streaming content regularly on both devices. The iPhone showed it had not been connected for 4 days although I had used the phone at least 5 times in the previous 3 days.

Developer Response ,

I'm sorry you lost the hearing aid. If it was near the phone or iPad the hearing aid could connect under Accessibility>Hearing Devices. If it did not connect, you are not near the device.
