Ratings and Reviews
Good but not great (yet)
Better than Apple News but still far too much noise and stories such as sport and Coronation Street of which I have no interest. I’m still working on the settings and hopefully given more time the stories will be relevant to me.
Given how much we willingly let Google know about us I would’ve expected the stories to be more relevant. It would be interesting to know where and what data Google is using for its algorithms to generate the newsfeed. Hopefully, Google News product updates will be frequent and provide incremental improvements to the service.
For now this will be my main daily news feed until somebody produces a better system or the Google product improves.
Fix the darned bugs please!
It’s a great app for reading news, but is plagued by bugs that the dev team just does not seem to care about (I can say that, because they have been around for over a year and I have reported them more than once)
When you remove a news source from you feed or if you remove a saved story from your saved stories, a banner appears at the bottom saying “source removed” or “story removed”. The only button shown is “undo”. There is no dismiss button and no way to swipe the banner away. That would be ok if the banner went away after a few seconds, but it just lingers there day after day. Sometimes it’s just annoying, at other times it makes it impossible to read an article because it covers the accept and reject buttons of the cookie consent pages that sometimes pop up and cover the whole page. The only way to get rid of the banner is to force quit the news app. Way to go for user experience. As I said before, I reported this bug several times, but the Google News team either doesn’t care about user reviews and bug reports or doesn’t even bother reading them (which I guess is the same thing). It would take a developer about 10 minutes to add a “dismiss” button to that banner. Just do it.
Another low effort Google app
We all know Google quality has been steadily coming down over the course of the last decade. This app is just another example of it.
When you switch to some other app and back to Google News, the app simply resets itself most of the times making you lose the article you were reading. It would be very simple to save where the user was but that is apparently too much effort.
When you are in the Following view, then select a category and then an article, when swiping right to go back to the category the app goes all the way back to the Following view.
It does not matter how many time you tell the app that you do not want to see certain topics that often or at all. They will come back even more often than before.
These and many more issues have been there for years but Google does not care anymore.
