This is excellent but you won’t know by the free demo!

Yes this app is great. Lots of pop up advise and articles. Lots of prompts on how to manage things if you are taking on new areas (I’m expanding into Greenhouse with ornamentals and a vegetable garden) I’m an experienced gardener and I find this app very useful. You can curate your own garden or wish list and break these down into different lists. But you really won’t get a taste of what the app can do on the limited free access I had. RHS - perhaps offer full access for a few weeks to give people a proper taste?

OK but needs more work

I have taken out a subscription to this app, but hope that it has significantly improved within the next year. There are a number of drawbacks to the app compared to some others. The first is that there is a limit of 49 to the number of collections you can create; so it is not possible for us to use the app to record plants in all the different spaces in our gardening areas. Picture This has no limit on the number of collections and I am therefore using 65 at the moment. A second issue is that, unlike Picture This which has a Snap History, the app does not record every identification you make unless you choose to add it into a collection. A third is that RHS Grow tells you a plant is non-native but not where it is native to; so, to find out where it is native you have to use Picture This or Wikipedia. Finally, there are just too many “taps“ compared to other apps. It keeps asking if you want to do what you have just asked it to do. Having said that, the app does use the RHS database to offer varieties of plants which other apps do not which would make it ideal for cataloguing if there wasn’t a limit on the number of Collections. Let’s see how it goes over the next year.

Reflections after a year of use
Improvergardener
I’ve been using the app for a year, coinciding with moving house. I like the ease of recording info about the plants, and capturing photos in an organised way. The identifier is handy. However, I have noticed that “garden notes” (ie general journal notes not linked to a plant) are disappearing after 12 months. So as I do some tasks this January, I cannot look back at the dates and photos for equivalent jobs a year ago. This is not good - makes it hard to compare actions year on year and undermines the app’s utility as a reference database. Is it possible to create some kind of archive feature, so last year’s journal can be stored for comparison purposes? Or even an ability to export it to a spreadsheet or PDF.
Developer Response
Thank you for your review and insights a year into your subscription. To enable us to address the issues you have outlined above, please could you email the technical team at rhsgrow@rhs.org.uk. We would love to hear from you!
Frozen App
HensHouse
I am desperately sad to be rating this app so low. I loved the app when I first had it and busily set about adding my plants, using the advice etc. The subscription price seemed good value. I recommended it to many others. However, that happiness is now misery because the app froze on the log in screen one day. It took several attempts to get through to the RHS Grow team because they’re only contactable by e mail and the RHS membership line gave me the wrong address twice. Over several weeks the RHS Grow team contact has been lovely and engaged their tech team, but they have not been able to resolve the issue and I am left with an app I can’t access and an expensive subscription that’s wasted. UPDATE: The RHS Grow Tech Team have been unable to resolve the issue and my subscription has been partially refunded. Very unsatisfactory outcome.
Developer Response
Hello, we are very sorry about this and hope the ongoing dialogue with the RHS Grow Team will resolve this issue.
