AT&T Secure Family Companion® is a mobile app installed on family member’s devices to help their parents or guardians protect them by locating their device in real-time and managing their child’s screen time as well as the content they may access online. Secure Family is available for all families, no matter which mobile provider you use. Take your family’s safety to the next level. Any parent at any time can restrict access to content and for how long you’re capable of using your device. A 16-year-old can have their phone restricted to an elementary level if their parents are unreasonable. You wanna use Google? No dice, high school student, it’s past 9pm. Need something for school about the human body? Turns out that photos of the endocrine system are counted as harmful content! You can’t even send requests through the app. As a child, you can see your map and send out an SOS, nothing more. No negotiating, no messages, or sending a notification. It’s “I don’t trust you unless it's an emergency.” This app is an invasion of privacy and you can’t even delete it. It harms the parent-child relationship by forming a negative, helicopter-parent environment in which the child has no privacy no matter how old they are. Not to mention the constant bugs involving the VPN and map. The map randomly turns off and the VPN can damage wifi connections through an infinite loop of the VPN turning off and on, forcing wifi to load over and over without stability, preventing a proper connection to the internet.

I installed this on me and my daughter’s phones thinking I could limit her screen time because I was sure she was staying up past 3AM and she wasn’t waking up on time. However, I didn’t realize just how much control this app gives you, and it completely ruined my relationship with my daughter. She told me that it’s a major invasion of privacy, and she could also delete the app whenever she wanted. She said that she can’t even use Google after the limit, which is something I did not know.Another thing is that when I turned off the Wi-Fi, just to test it, it didn’t work for her still even after I turned it back on.All in all, this app will break your relationship with your child— their trust in you? Gone. You may think that it’s just an app to help out with sleep schedules or too much screen time like I did, but that’s not the case. Not all of these one-star reviews are from children, either, so take that into account. Parents, please do not get this app and damage your relationship with your kid like I did.

What kind of relationship are you trying to build with this? It’s like panopticon. Every move I make, I’m worried that I’ve done something wrong. That they’re watching. Why were they allowed to run wild and live free when they now make me sit still and be perfect? I can’t do anything. Schoolwork? Blocked. Anatomy for class? Heck no! It’s inappropriate. And now I find out my family, struggling to make ends meet due to unemployment is spending so much on this because they’ve deemed me untrustworthy after a hospital visit due to mental health. This has not and will not ever improve a relationship between guardian and child. To have to ask for them to unlock my internet in front of family and friends just to do something they asked me to, which frustrates them. How dare I ask for them to use an app they forced upon me? I truly do not see a use for this. Please just get a family tracker for location if that’s your concern. Children WILL limit themselves if screen time isn’t a scarcity. Please, we’re almost adults, how can you expect us to regulate for ourselves when the cutoff happens?

This is a truly great piece of art that can be easily deleted off of ones cellular device I recommend getting this app for a nice joke or prank on one of your kids because they will probably end up laughing at it and deleting the app entirely. The functions of this app are not entirely functional such as the location tracker sometimes this feature is so off that you can end up states away from your child or whom ever it is that your paired with. Keep in mind that this app might screw with your WiFi so you might not want to connect to your WiFi wile using this app. If there are any kids reading this trying to stay up simply hold down on the app and delete the app. What this will do is it will make your parents or whoever is paired with you extremely mad at you. Don’t worry though now that the app isn’t on your phone you can do whatever you want. Now to the parents that use this app. One easy fix to every problem one could have with this app simply find another app. This might seem hard but it will be worth it.
