Who knew an adorable llama could help us stay healthy and hydrated?

The National Academy of Medicine recommends 9 cups of fluids a day for women and 13 for men. How many of us actually reach that goal? Thankfully, Waterllama has figured out how to motivate us to stay hydrated and reach for healthier beverages. It does so by infusing health-tracking with a little whimsy.

Seasonal challenges, showcased through in-app events, inspired us to find healthier ways to hydrate. (Turns out alcohol and caffeinated drinks can actually dehydrate you.) A cheetah sporting a visor got us to cut down on sugary drinks around Halloween. A playful platypus encouraged us to lighten up on lactose. In fact, Waterllama can handle pretty much any hydration goal you throw at it.

Logging a drink colors in your llama; each beverage type gets its own hue. Fun challenges keep you coming back.

Sticking with a 10-day challenge earned us even more adorableness, like a tiger for Lunar New Year and a puffin for Thanksgiving. (A turkey would’ve been too obvious!)

Waterllama’s fun shines through in both its Home Screen widgets and Lock Screen widgets, which allow you to keep tabs on your beverage consumption and quickly log a drink.

Quick tip

Want to get granular with your tracking? There are over 40 drinks to choose from (like smoothies, kombucha, diet soda, and green tea), and you can always add your own. After tapping one, swipe up or down on the cup to specify the number of ounces.

Meet the creator

Waterllama was created by Ukrainian couple Vitalii Mogylevets and Polina Komisarova-Mogylevets. Despite the war in Ukraine, Vitalii and Polina continued to release major updates and in-app events throughout the year.

Fun fact

There are over 30 animals to unlock, but users have gravitated to one in particular. “The llama is still everyone’s favorite!” says Vitalii. That includes the creators themselves. “For our wedding, Polina and I wanted to have a photo shoot with llamas.”
