Ratings and Reviews
Great. But beware the ‘AVOID TOLLS’ option! 😡
Always rely on Google Maps when we’re in the US, and especially liked the ‘Avoid Tolls’ option when you’re in a rental car and don’t want a hefty admin fee from the agency for going through a cashless toll. However I discovered last week that it’s not reliable - drove from Ohio to Staten Island NY with ‘avoid tolls’ selected, no warnings/pop-ups to say anything to the contrary, only to find ourselves at a $15 bridge toll to get over to Staten Island. Turns out there is no way to avoid a toll on to the island, fair enough, but if that’s the case PLEASE GOOGLE can you give us some notification of this when we select the route? I could easily have gone to an ATM and got the money before we got there if I’d known, but the only mention of the toll is hidden away down in the route description, and the top of it still says ‘avoid tolls’. No warnings whatsoever. So I’m now looking at a hefty fine/admin fee that would have been entirely avoidable if the nav info had been more accurate. Yes I know that all New Yorkers are aware there’s a toll, but it was a last minute trip and I trusted google maps to just avoid the tolls if that’s what was selected, or tell me if it wasn’t possible.
For future updates, the difference between cash and cashless tolls would be useful info, so we could avoid cashless tolls, but use cash tolls, as that’s what most people out of state are worried about.
My go to navigation app. But...
Google Maps is an amazing free app. It’s just about bang on for most destinations. Some recent upgrade I only noticed the other day, like UK speed camera warning.
I’ve always found it pretty accurate for the most part but a bit slow to react. Like all NAV apps or devices, you need to check the screen because the directions aren’t always clear enough for some sections of road. I’ve found it very useful in London, but again you need to glance at the screen to be sure as sometimes the verbal instructions don’t come on.
Just like any other technology, don’t just rely on it to know what’s best. Always check the route it’s suggested and make sure the vehicle you’re driving is suitable for these roads. I would like the functionality to drag the route away from the chose one, like you can on a computer. Handheld devices are more powerful than computers if not so many years ago, so this functionality should be possible.
Well done Google on a brilliant free app.
Your log-in and location data is valuable to Google
What I noticed while using the app was that when I logged out and used it, I started getting ads from a taxi operator. This tells me my personalised log-in data coupled with my location data over time is very valuable to Google, like gold. So they don’t bother with the ads when you’re logged in. But when I logged out, they felt they had to monetise me in some other way. The personal and location data compromise with Google is far too much for me to use this app long term. They really prefer you to be logged in when you use the app, but it’s not necessary. I also found they encouraged (or one could say “tricked”) me to set location to “always on”, rather than “while using the app” using the reason that I would receive up to the minute traffic information. But the traffic info was perfectly OK even when location was only on while using the app, so I think it is highly questionable of Google to encourage us to have location always on.
No way is this app as “free” as it appears.
The app used my search and location data to encourage me to write reviews of places I’d been, yet while using the app I found out Google Maps staff had deleted six out of my nine truthful and factual reviews, without telling me the reasons and deliberately without any way to contact them to question their actions. They were covering up abuses I had suffered from British police, lawyers and companies by doing this.
