Great but for notification bug
I rely on the ESPN app to send me notifications as I’ve chosen for my favorite teams. For the most part it has been great for that but for one minor but increasingly irritating exception. Every so often (maybe every month or so), the Breaking News notification option gets set to “ON”. Every time this happens, I have to go into Preferences and Alerts, scroll down, and deselect the Breaking News option. Hearing the ESPN alert sound when I know I’ve only set it for announcing the status of games being played by only a handful of teams, then checking the update to find it’s some random bit of sports news (most recently boxing, which I don’t follow at all) is confusing and frustrating. I think “Oh! Did I forget a game is starting?” Then see a news alert I don’t care about and realize that once again I need to go into the app simply to turn off a preference I never turned on. Next time it happens, I’m turning Apple Watch alerts for ESPN off, and the time after that, I’m just turning off all notifications.
Great for scores, limits with everything else
I’ve had the app for a few years now, and overall it’s interface and customizability has made many improvements. Their articles are also top notch.
I’m a soccer fan, mostly global domestic leagues, and espn does a pretty poor job of coverage of the sport in the US. They used to show highlights for many of the top leagues worldwide, and without any warning they stopped playing any highlights from EPL games, which to me is a pretty big deal to miss out on. Even things like baseball too, where they used to have “sportscenter” style highlights for each game, now you just get a link to some random play from that game rather than a true highlight summary reel.
I shelled out for espn+ because I thought I could get access to a lot more, but honestly it isn’t all that much. Unless you like the espn documentaries, podcasts, or UFC, I find I’m paying $5/month really just to skip commercials and a couple in depth articles (nice feature, but not sure if it’s worth that much).
Lastly, obviously they are a huge company, but their customer service is pretty poor. I’ve reached out a couple times, get a quick response saying “we appreciate your feedback...” but really I’m just punted to some other department and never hear back or get resolution. So if you run into an issue or want to voice your opinion on the app, I wouldn’t expect much out of that.
PLEASE STOP TURNING ON BREAKING NEWS ALERTS
This app is only effective if you want to know scores after the fact and look them up personally. Whenever there is a game I am interested in, I never get alerts for it despite having the team alerts set up as well as the alerts for the specific game. I have to go into the app, knowing when the game has started, and check the scores that way. And even then, the scores are at least 10 minutes, if not more, behind live broadcasts. I never get final alerts when all I care about is the final score, I must look those up personally as well. And yet, despite never getting alerts for the things I want to know, every few days the “breaking alerts” toggle is switched on without my knowledge or permission and no matter how many times I actively turn it off. So I don’t get alerts for the things I want and instead get ridiculously annoying and fairly frequent alerts for things I have absolutely no interest in. Please stop automatically turning this option on, I doubt it’s a desired feature for most of your users and the ones that do want it, I’m sure can work out how to turn it on just fine. And please fix your notification system.
