Editors’ Notes

If you want to play fantasy sports, there are—ahem—leagues of apps to choose from. But we think ESPN Fantasy might be the MVP. Its minimal interface stays out of our way so we can focus on draft picks, trades, and managing our lineup. But the best part? ESPN’s got mini-stories on all of the hot prospects. So the more time we spend actually using the app, the better our team ends up.

Disappointed by forced video ads

NFL Fantasy scores to the .00 decimal which is a better representation of score than just rounding like ESPN does. I have a league in each, so I understand trying to dumb it down but I think just including that extra decimal place would make scores and projections better and more accurate. That, plus not changing matchups over until Tuesday or Wednesday is kind of annoying, it should be done Tuesday morning so we can preview matchups easier viewing our team rather than having to go through the league scoreboard. But these are minor things that could be fixed in an offseason update.

The worst part of the experience is FORCED VIDEO ADS. It’s not my preference to have a commercial latch onto my screen while I thought I was supposed to be seeing my matchup. The app made it clear that this would only be done once today. If it needs to be done, how badly does ESPN need the money? The news features, videos and lots of Matthew Berry are all good things but they’re all made cheap by including forced commercials in the app. Our league will likely be moving to NFL or Fleaflicker in the offseason because their apps don’t force video ads onto the screen.

Ads overriding volume has to go

This isn’t about how I think Yahoo’s Fantasy app is far better than ESPN’s. This is about the new ads before viewing your matchup. Before I start, ESPN has to make money and to do that they have to sell ads. I have no qualms with that. But when I’m laying down my infant daughter to go to sleep after a 12 hour work day and 2 hour commute and I finally got her asleep, I want to check my fantasy team. I want to see who’s been dropped by other teams, who I can play this week, and so on. Before I can do that though, an ad pops up and says, “We will only show this once a day.” and then with all the decibels of a jet taking off begins to play an add about NFL Sunday ticket or something like that and woke my daughter. 45 minutes later I finally got her back to sleep and don’t care one bit about fantasy. Please ESPN, just don’t allow the ads to override my volume settings anymore.
